Dr. Parnassus reviews embargoed until TIFF

Heath Ledger PR PhotosTerry Gilliam’s ‘The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus,’ has had its setbacks.

First, one of the movie’s stars, Heath Ledger, died in the middle of filming. Gilliam finished it – casting Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell in Ledger’s role – but then had trouble finding a distributor for the project,

Now E1 Entertainment Distribution is behind Dr. Parnassus in Canada, where it is scheduled for an October 16 release, and Sony Pictures Classics has taken on U.S. distribution and the date is set for December 25, so it will open alongside ‘Sherlock Holmes’ starring Robert Downey Jr.

But you won’t have to wait if you can make it to the Toronto International Film Festival where ‘The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus’ — which is about a travelling theatre troupe that has made a pact with the devil and also stars Christopher Plummer and Tom Waits – will screen on September 18 and 19.

Interestingly, Variety reports that E1 has issued a review embargo on the film and journalists have been asked to sign an agreement to hold all reviews or comments until the Film Festival begins.

It’s an odd move that E1 reportedly claims is designed to keep critics from scooping each other and killing the buzz. But said buzz would probably be difficult to kill, as the movie contains Ledger’s final performance. Also, the film screened out of competition at Cannes last May, so critics are said to be wondering why introduce the seemingly harsh restrictions at this stage of the game.

On top of that, Variety also reports that at the Toronto media screening, the fourth and fifth reels of the film were shown out of order, necessitating a second screening.

Bad Boys 3 in the works

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 12:20 pm on

Smith and Lawrence PR PhotosThe bad boys are coming for you, again. Watchagonnado?

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Columbia Pictures is developing a third instalment in the buddy cop series, ‘Bad Boys.’

The first of the action comedies, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as Miami detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, came out in 1995. It was a mild box office success, and was followed by a much more profitable sequel in 2003.

The Jerry Bruckheimer produced ‘Bad Boys’ was pivotal in launching the careers of director Michael Bay (‘Armageddon,’ ‘Transformers’) and actor Will Smith, who was at the time still starring on TV as the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

The finer details of ‘Bad Boys 3′ are still being hashed out but the original players have expressed an interest in the project. Columbia, however, still needs to come up with a story as well as the money for the supersized Hollywood paycheques.

One wonders what the outcome might have been had the studio gone with its original casting idea. A 1992 New York Times article had ‘Saturday Night Live’ alum Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz working on ‘Bad Boys.’ Somewhere along the way, plans were obviously changed.

Twilight star finds hyperventilating fans “overwhelming

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 11:53 am on

Taylor Lautner PR PhotosMedics have been called to the set of the ‘Twilight’ movies to help fans who are overcome by star sightings.

In what sound like scenes remiscent of the early days of Frank Sinatra or the Beatles, young people (the majority of which are probably girls)  are going nuts and losing their breath over hunks of burning love Rob Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. Talking with Interview magazine, Lautner, who plays werewolf Jacob Black in the ‘Twilight’ vampire series, says “We’ve met many different fans: the criers, who come around quite often; the hyperventilators, who stop breathing and have to have a medic come. We’ve definitely seen some passion.”

The 17 year old also says the fans are “very intense…I like meeting them. But, yeah, they’re pretty intense. Sometimes it becomes a little overwhelming.”

Green Hornet release date pushed back from July to December 2010

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 10:06 am on

tn_Seth Rogen PRSome have wondered if the flight of ‘The Green Hornet,’ is ever going to take off. But a Sony rep has confirmed to Access Hollywood that it will, eventually.

The remake of the television show — which ran for only one season in 1966-67 – was set for a July 2010 release but has been pushed back to December.

This is good news, according to Seth Rogen, who stars as the Hornet and his alter ego, Britt Reid. Rogen told HitFix.com, “We’re both relieved and psyched about the change. It gives more time for post, which would have been immensely rushed if we were to come out in the summer. It also affords us more time to promote the film, (now we can go to Comic-con with more than a car!) and ultimately is a great vote of confidence from the studio.”

The project has hit a few snags along the way, including lineup changes. ‘Kung-Fu Hustle’ creator Stephen Chow was set to direct and play the role of sidekick Kato (the role that introduced American audiences to Hong Kong martial arts expert Bruce Lee), but dropped out of the project. Instead, French visual innovator Michel Gondry has signed on to direct.

The Green Hornet will also feature Nicolas Cage as criminal mastermind Mr. X and Cameron Diaz as Lenore Case, Reid’s secretary.

Rogen co-wrote the script with his regular writing partner Evan Goldberg. The pair previously collaborated on ‘Superbad’ and ‘Pineapple Express.’

Rambo V ready to go ahead

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 9:56 am on

Sylvester Stallone PR PhotosJohn Rambo is officially gearing up for another mission.

Variety says Nu Image/Millennium Films has greenlit the fifth Rambo movie. Sylvester Stallone will star and direct.

The project’s storyline, according to Variety, involves Rambo fighting his way through human traffickers and drug lords to rescue a young girl abducted near the U.S.-Mexico border.

John Rambo, troubled Vietnam veteran, was introduced on the big screen in 1982’s ‘First Blood,’ based on David Morrell’s 1972 novel of the same name. Three installments followed and many expected the fourth, 2008’s ‘Rambo IV,’ to be the last but the 63-year-old Sly said in interviews at the beginning of this year that a fifth Rambo movie was in the offing. ‘Rambo IV’ grossed $42 million domestically and $113 million overseas.

Production on ‘Rambo V’ will begin in spring.

Currently, Stallone and Nu Image/Millennium are putting the finishing touches on ‘Expendables,’ starring Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li and Mickey Rourke. The film pays tribute to the action movie blockbusters of the 80s and early 90s and, accordingly, features appearances by Dolph Lundgren, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis. It is set for release April 23.

Rob Zombie to remake The Blob

Rob Zombie PR PhotosHorror director Rob Zombie will remake ‘The Blob,’ according to Variety.

Zombie, who revived the ‘Halloween’ franchise and breathed new life into Michael Myers has set his sights on the 1958 classic and will write, direct and produce the remake.

In the original ‘Blob,’ which starred a 28-year-old Steve McQueen as teenager Steve Andrews, an amorphous creature from outer space crashes to Earth and starts eating people, growing exponentially and terrorizing the small community of Downington, Pennsylvania.

Variety says that, while Zombie was a fan of the original, he will take an entirely different approach. He did not, however, divulge any details, saying only, “My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing — that’s the first thing I want to change.” He added. “That gigantic Jello-looking thing might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now.”

A comedy sequel to ‘The Blob’ titled, ‘Beware! The Blob,’ was released in 1972. There was also a 1988 remake of the original, which involved a secret government conspiracy.

In 2007, Zombie told EW ”I’m not going to do any more Halloween movies, or any more remakes of any kind. I signed up for two more pictures, but not two more Halloween pictures,” he says. ”They’re going to be original stuff — and I don’t necessarily know that they’re going to be related to the horror genre either.”

Zombie’s ‘Halloween II’ comes out today, August 28.

Bobcat Goldthwait impressed with Robin Williams’ Manhood

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 2:03 pm on

Williams and Goldthwait PR PhotosRobin Williams doesn’t just have a big personality, according to his friend Bobcat Goldthwait.

Godthwait, who directed the actor and comedian in the black comedy ‘World’s Greatest Dad,’ made the observation after shooting Williams waxed and naked.

WENN says via Starpulse that the famously hirsute, and apparently insecure Williams insisted on stripping for a scene and then decided to keep his clothes off for the day. Goldthwait was blown away by the magnitude of his pal’s performance. He said, “I spent the whole day with Robin… He’s bottomless for the whole day on the set and I was like, ‘Why are you insecure…?’ If I was hung like him I wouldn’t have pants on right now. Honestly, if that was me, I’d just be, like, walking around: ‘How do you like me now, b**ches?’”

‘World’ Greatest Dad’ stars Williams as a high school poetry teacher, failed writer and single father to a disturbed teenaged boy. A USA Today review said the non-family friendly film, which features foul language, sexual content and disturbing images may qualify as “the most uncomfortable and unsettling movie to sit through of any this year.”

Downey Jr. says Sherlock Holmes is tough part to play

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 11:21 am on

Robert Downey Jr PR PhotosBeing an action hero is tough but not as tough as being a detective.

Robert Downey Jr., who stars in the upcoming Sherlock Holmes movie told MTV News, “Sherlock Holmes is easily the toughest job I’ve ever had.”

In Guy Ritchie’s big-budget adaption, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s character is reinvented for the 21st century as (what else?) a martial arts expert. Holmes is “a total bada**,” says the Oscar winning actor. “He thinks through all eventualities, possibilities and counterattacks when he’s fighting, so he actually has the fight worked out before he starts.”

Canadian actress Rachel McAdams plays Holmes’ love interest on screen but word is that the real romance in the movie is the one between Holmes and his sidekick Watson, played by Jude Law. For months the Internet has been abuzz with speculation about the nature of the relationship between the two men, said to contain homoerotic undertones. But it’s not a bromance. That’s so 2007.

Downey Jr. is cavalier on the subject telling MTV, “I think bromance is passé. We are two men who happen to be roommates who wrestle a lot!”

Sherlock Holmes hits theatres December 25th.

Drew Barrymore’s boot camp

Drew Barrymore PR PhotosDrew Barrymore whipped the cast into shape for her directorial debut ‘Whip It,’ set to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Juliette Lewis told MTV News that Barrymore ran a two-month-long boot camp in preparation for the film, during which the film’s stars, Lewis, Ellen Page, Kristen Wiig and Barrymore would wake up in the morning, do yoga, strength-train for two hours then go roller skating until nightfall. The result was a lot of bruises and some strong female camaraderie.

“We all felt like action heroes!” said the actress and singer.

‘Whip It,’ based on the Shauna Cross novel ‘Derby Girl,’ tells the story of Bliss Cavendar, a Texas small-town wannabe tomboy teen (Page). Pushed by her former-debutante mother (Marcia Gay Harden) to compete in beauty pageants, Bliss joins a roller derby team to escape the pressures/doldrums and discovers an undergound punk rock world. She soon finds herself leading a double life. Wiig and Barrymore are her teammates Malice in Wonderland and Smashley Simpson, while Lewis is the antagonistic nemesis/rival team captain, Iron Maven.

The story is a fictionalized autobiographical account by author and screenwriter Shauna Cross, who skated for the Texas Rollergirls.

Juliette Lewis told MTV that female roller derby culture is “a bit of wrestler culture, rock-and-roll culture, band culture and sports, because they’re all incredible athletes.”

Lewis, who has been away from Hollywood concentrating on her music career with her rock band Juliette and the Licks, speaks highly of Barrymore’s professionalism and vision, telling MTV, “She was so visually prepared.

“You can talk about scenes and emotion and acting crap all day, but at the end of the day, you have to shoot the shot. She knew what she wanted cinematically.”

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 10:41 am on

In the movie, by ‘Juno’ screenwriter Diablo Cody, The 23-year-old plays a possessed, killer high school cheerleader and Seyfried is the best friend who must stop the evil.

Fox told MTV, “I feel much safer with girls, so I felt more comfortable kissing her in the movie than kissing any of the other people that I had to kiss.”

Seyfried, on the other hand, was less at ease. Fox said, “I think she was extremely uncomfortable. I don’t think that — I know that. She was not comfortable and there was a lot of laughing — like, giggling fits that happened in between takes.”
