Rob Zombie PR PhotosHorror director Rob Zombie will remake ‘The Blob,’ according to Variety.

Zombie, who revived the ‘Halloween’ franchise and breathed new life into Michael Myers has set his sights on the 1958 classic and will write, direct and produce the remake.

In the original ‘Blob,’ which starred a 28-year-old Steve McQueen as teenager Steve Andrews, an amorphous creature from outer space crashes to Earth and starts eating people, growing exponentially and terrorizing the small community of Downington, Pennsylvania.

Variety says that, while Zombie was a fan of the original, he will take an entirely different approach. He did not, however, divulge any details, saying only, “My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing — that’s the first thing I want to change.” He added. “That gigantic Jello-looking thing might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now.”

A comedy sequel to ‘The Blob’ titled, ‘Beware! The Blob,’ was released in 1972. There was also a 1988 remake of the original, which involved a secret government conspiracy.

In 2007, Zombie told EW ”I’m not going to do any more Halloween movies, or any more remakes of any kind. I signed up for two more pictures, but not two more Halloween pictures,” he says. ”They’re going to be original stuff — and I don’t necessarily know that they’re going to be related to the horror genre either.”

Zombie’s ‘Halloween II’ comes out today, August 28.
