The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Columbia Pictures is developing a third instalment in the buddy cop series, ‘Bad Boys.’

The first of the action comedies, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as Miami detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, came out in 1995. It was a mild box office success, and was followed by a much more profitable sequel in 2003.

The Jerry Bruckheimer produced ‘Bad Boys’ was pivotal in launching the careers of director Michael Bay (‘Armageddon,’ ‘Transformers’) and actor Will Smith, who was at the time still starring on TV as the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

The finer details of ‘Bad Boys 3′ are still being hashed out but the original players have expressed an interest in the project. Columbia, however, still needs to come up with a story as well as the money for the supersized Hollywood paycheques.

One wonders what the outcome might have been had the studio gone with its original casting idea. A 1992 New York Times article had ‘Saturday Night Live’ alum Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz working on ‘Bad Boys.’ Somewhere along the way, plans were obviously changed.
