Ex-drug smuggling teen lands movie role

Jake GyllenhaalJake Gyllenhaal was so impressed with a troubled teen that he landed the kid a part in the movie ‘Brothers,’ according to Starpulse.

In the movie, Gyllenhaal plays a grown up juvenile delinquent and, as part of his research for the role, he spent time with convicted drug smugglers and murderers to learn about life as a youth behind bars. Gyllenhaal met with teens serving life sentences as well as others who have been freed and are trying to get their lives together.

One teen, Victor, reportedly made such an impact on Gyllenhaal and director Jim Sheridan that they cast him in the film.

The actor said, “This kid Victor was in jail and he was released and had the opportunity to change his life and told us stories that were unreal to me. He was hiding meth in the back of a lamp of a four wheel vehicle driving over the border and he was 16. He changed his life and is working for the governor’s office in Sacramento now.

“Jim ended up putting him in the movie in a scene where my brother Tobey Maguire’s helicopter goes down.”

The film tells the story of two siblings, Captain Sam Cahill (Maguire) and younger brother Tommy Cahill (Jake Gyllenhaal). When Sam, a Marine, goes missing in Afghanistan, Tommy moves into Sam’s home to look after his family. He does a little too much “looking after” Sam’s wife (played by Natalie Portman), however, and everything turns a little uncomfortable when Sam returns home.

Kill Bill Vol. 3 will not be called Kill Bill

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 12:26 pm on

Uma ThurmanAs the buzz starts to mount about a third ‘Kill Bill’ movie, you might be asking, “Didn’t Bill get killed in ‘Kill Bill Vol. 2? And, in that case, shouldn’t the third movie be called something else?”

Well, the answers are a) Yes. Bill did get killed, when The Bride, a.k.a. Beatrix Kiddo, used the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique on him. And b) Also, yes. Quentin Tarantino has already thought of that.

The director told MTV, “It wouldn’t be ‘Kill Bill.’ It would be Volume 3 of the story of The Bride.”

The Bride is played by Uma Thurman, who developed the character with Tarantino. The end of the second movie saw the former member of a deadly group of assassins reunited with her daughter after exacting her revenge on Bill — who had, years earlier, killed everyone at her wedding rehearsal, stolen the unborn child from her womb, and left her for dead.

Whatever it winds up being called, work on the project won’t begin just yet. Tarantino always said he would wait ten years, to give the Bride’s character some time to spend with her daughter, before putting her in another flick.

“There’s no script; there are just ideas and notes,” Tarantino told MTV. “I won’t do that next, but it could very well be the thing I do after next.”

David Carradine, the actor who played Bill, died in June of this year.

East to meet west in Indira Gandhi biopic

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 11:45 am on

Madhuri DixitBollywood and Hollywood will collaborate on a two-part epic about the life of former Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi.

The UK Telegraph says the biopic is due to start filming in April of next year in India, the UK, Russia and the US. ‘Mother: The Indira Gandhi Story,’ has a budget of $65 million and an international cast and crew.

Madhuri Dixit, a.k.a. “The Queen of Bollywood,” will play the title role. Helen Mirren is in talks to portray Queen Elizabeth II, again. Tom Hanks and Tommy Lee Jones are attached to play Lyndon B Johnson and Richard Nixon. British actress Emily Watson will reportedly play Margaret Thatcher, and Albert Finney is expected to take the role of Peter Ustinov, who was in New Delhi waiting to meet the Indian leader when she was killed in 1984.

Director Krishna Shah has been penning the script for over two decades. He told the Telegraph, “The story is of how Indira is a mother in every aspect of her life, and how she used her instincts, compassion and tough love to hold the nation together — ultimately ending with her violent death and martyrdom to the cause of national unity.”

Shah said he hopes the collaboration between Bollywood and Hollywood will lead to more such tie-ups in the future.

Variety also recently reported on the film and said that it will be in “Hinglish” — meaning a mix of Hindi and English — and that there will be songs, though it is not a Bollywood-style film.

Indira Gandhi was Prime Minister of India for three consecutive terms from 1966 to 1977 and a fourth term from 1980 until her assassination in 1984.

The first of the two installments of ‘Mother: The Indira Gandhi Story’ is expected for release at the end of 2011.

Astute fans spot New Moon mistakes

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 8:49 am on

Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautne, Kristen Stewart and Robert PattinsonIt’s hard to make a perfect movie, as a trip to MovieMistakes.com will prove. The website is a destination for fans to list errors they spot in films.

The ‘Twilight’ sequel, ‘New Moon,’ has become the latest to get picked apart. So far, fans have spotted 20 errors in the vampire/werewolf flick. Many of these involve the placement of character Bella Swan’s hair. For example: “When Bella is in the parking lot at school in the beginning, Edward walks toward her. Bella’s hair is neatly pulled off to the side. When he leans in for the kiss it is suddenly stuck to her forehead, and when Edward tells her Jacob wants her, it’s suddenly back to normal.”

And in another scene, “where Bella is in the meadow talking to Laurent, Bella’s hair is at first straight and then in the next scene it is wispy and pushed back and then it is straight again.”

Someone also noticed that, “In the montage scenes where we see Bella’s depression, when the camera is circling her, the camera man is shown in the mirror (twice) behind her.”

And, “When Bella is flying to Italy they show a Virgin America airplane. Virgin America only flies within certain cities in the US. Virgin Atlantic flies from the US to Europe.”

‘New Moon’ topped the box office for the second time in a row over the weekend.

Landmine documentary put on hold

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 8:45 am on

Armand AssanteActor Armand Assante has had to give up making a documentary on landmines in Croatia and Africa, because the project was bankrupting him.

The World Entertainment News Network says the ‘Judge Dredd’ star was funding the film, ‘Blind Dragon,’ himself. But he can no longer do so and is hoping a benefactor will step in and offer up some funds.

Assante said, “I lost so much funding doing that on my own that I was going broke, so I learned about filmmaking the hard way. I worked on that in Croatia and on the way to Angola they tried to extort my money there, so I had to get out of there. If I continue doing it, I need financing to finish it.

“I can only hope the economy will turn around… but, even then, this is a very difficult subject to broach. Originally I got involved with the Land Mine Survivors Network in 1990…when I went to Croatia in the late 90s, I decided I wanted to be involved in the removal of and finance the removal of land mines because it is so catastrophic in certain parts of the world.

“The only answer is to get governments to get with the world bank and finance the removal of them because it’s probably one of the most exponential disasters on the planet. That’s why this film is important.”

Reynolds has new appreciation for The Green Lantern

Ryan ReynoldsRyan Reynolds, who will play the Green Lantern in the 2011 movie, never followed the comic strips but has a new appreciation for the character.

Scarlett Johansson’s husband told MTV, “I’ve known about ‘Green Lantern’ my whole life, but I’ve never really followed it before. I fell in love with the character when I met with [the director] Martin Campbell. When I sat down with him, I really got what it is that this guy is all about.”

Reynolds also has some pretty high praise for Campbell himself: “When you have a guy like Martin Campbell, part of his charm is that he has ba–s of titanium, and the other part is that he’s slightly crazy, and you have to be to take on something with the scope of ‘Green Lantern.’ He’s less of the director and more of a general. He just really knows strategies, he knows the intricacies, and his attention to detail! It’s infectious. I sat down with him, and I could not even believe what he was saying. When I went to the meeting, I was entirely cynical. I thought, ‘What the hell, I’ll see what they have to say,’ and I left the room with a completely different perspective.”

The actor also has a lead role in the X-Men spinoff, ‘Deadpool,’ and is planning on following up the hit romantic comedy, ‘The Proposal,’ with another project with his good friend and co-star Sandra Bullock.

He said, “We wouldn’t do a sequel, but we’re looking for something to do together again. Everyone used to do it back in the day. I’m not comparing us to [Spencer] Tracy and [Katharine] Hepburn, but they worked together all the time. So hopefully we can find something that works.”

Comedian lands desired role with the help of a grizzly bear

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 12:15 pm on

TJ MillerLos Angeles based comedian TJ Miller went to great lengths to land a role in Warner Bros’ ‘Yogi Bear’ movie.

Miller, who has a role on the TV series ‘Carpoolers’ and appeared in the film ‘Cloverfield’ went through two unsuccessful auditions for the pic, which stars Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake, before taking things to a whole other level, according to Nikki Finke’s Deadline Hollywood blog.

Miller enlisted the help of Bambam, a grizzly bear at the Hollywood Animal Ranch and shot a very funny video. Bambam proves to be more interested in eating the script and some proffered marshmallows than in helping Miller land the gig, but in the end, all went well. Studio boss Alan Horn and producer Donald De Line saw the footage, says Finke, and offered him the part of Ranger Smith in the film. Miller is now in New Zealand shooting.

Meryl Streep is rated R

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 11:26 am on

Meryl StreepStarpulse is reporting that the producers of Meryl Streep’s new movie ‘It’s Complicated,’ are to appeal its ‘R’ rating classification.

Officials at the MPAA’s Classification and Rating Administration have ruled that people under the age of 17 will have to be accompanied by a consenting adult to see the movie in the U.S., because of “some drug content and sexuality.” But Starpulse says producers are seeking a softer rating by appeal and that an R could affect the romantic comedy’s Academy Award aspirations.

The story follows a love quadrangle between Jane (Streep), her ex-husband Jake (Alec Baldwin), Jake’s current and much younger wife Agness (Lake Bell), and Adam, an architect hired to remodel Jane’s kitchen (Steve Martin).

‘It’s Complicated’ comes out December 25.

Avatar is “literally vomit inducing”

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 8:52 am on

James Cameron‘Avatar’ opens December 18 and movie fans on the Internet are gearing up. It’s been over a decade since James Cameron’s ‘Titanic,’ and his latest effort, long in the making, is being touted as a technological breakthrough.

The film, which uses specially designed cameras, combines 3-D and stereoscopic filmmaking, and cost $273 million to make, is generating a great deal of hype. But there are those who refuse to get excited.

Hollywood website Gawker.com has published an anonymous letter/review from someone it claims is a “real live entertainment worker,” who has seen large segments of the movie. In the letter, the nameless person says ‘Avatar’ is “literally vomit inducing.” Gawker says the letter adds to the “mounting evidence that ‘Avatar’ will suck.” It certainly adds to the evidence that there are people who desperately want it to “suck.”

The letter writer begins with, “I watch a lot of movies, and am especially obsessed with watching horrible films with inflated budgets. I was delighted to find that Avatar didn’t disappoint in the absolutely horrible fetishizing of azure humanoids that James Cameron has obviously been drawing on the back covers of his notebooks since middle school…”

“The problem” says the letter writer, is “with cutting in between 3D focal points and perspective – the mind cannot adjust to it without a buffer – thus, Avatar is literally vomit inducing.”

The writer says the film is “alienating” and “weird” and that “there are very beautiful moments, with great editing/sound/art direction, but overall it’s a horrible piece of sh*t.”

‘Avatar’ is an epic set on a distant planet called Pandora, which is home to an indigenous population called the Na’vi. It stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver.

Amityville Horror, again?

tn_amityvilleIt seems like an odd choice but the Weinstein Company and Dimension Films are planning  to remake ’The Amityville Horror,’ again. This is according to horror film site Bloody Disgusting.

‘The Amityville Horror’ was just remade in 2005. Directed by Andrew Douglas and starring Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George, the reboot grossed over $100 million at the worldwide box office. The original film was made in 1979 and it starred Margot Kidder and James Brolin as a couple who move into a house that they discover was the site of a multiple murder — and, as a result, is haunted. It is based on the allegedly true story of George and Kathy Lutz, as told in a book by Jay Anson, also titled ‘The Amityville Horror.’

The haunting has been the subject of nine films in total. These are:

The Amityville Horror (1979)
Amityville II: The Possession (1982)
Amityville 3D (1983) (3-D, also released as Amityville III: The Demon)
Amityville 4: The Evil Escapes (1989)
The Amityville Curse (1990)
Amityville: It’s About Time (1992)
Amityville: A New Generation (1993)
Amityville Dollhouse (1996)
The Amityville Horror (2005 remake)

This would be the tenth. Speculation is that the cash-strapped Dimension films is trying to save itself through a spate of reboots, sequels and remakes. The company, according to Moviehole.net, is currently working on ‘Spy Kids 4′ and ‘Scream 4,’ as well as remakes of ‘The Children of the Corn’ and ‘Hellraiser.’

The report says that there might be a director already in talks to develop the project. There is further speculation that the new film will be in 3-D.
