Susan SarandonCritically acclaimed actress Susan Sarandon was honoured on Saturday with a lifetime achievement award at the Stockholm International Film Festival.

The award was presented by Swedish actor, Gustaf Hammarsten who played Lutz, Sacha Baron Cohen’s sidekick in 2009’s ‘Bruno.’

After an interview and discussion, 63-year-old Sarandon accepted the bronze horse — the heaviest of all film awards, weighing 7.3 kilograms — and joked with the crowd saying she hoped the prize “would be my mid-life award.”

Of the Oscar-winning actress (for her role as Sister Helen Prejean in the 1995 film ‘Dead Man Walking’) Hammarsten said, “The roles Susan Sarandon has played often gain a life of their own beyond the films themselves.

“Reflection, seduction and rebellion animate her characters and seem to be the key tools in her actor’s repertoire.”

Sarandon, a liberal political activist, said that she always envisions herself as a character actor and that she seeks out roles “that encourage people to be the protagonists in their own lives.”

On top of her win for ‘Dead Man Walking,’ Sarandon has received four other Academy Award nominations for ‘Atlantic City,’ ‘Thelma and Louise,’ ‘Lorenzo’s Oil,’ and ‘The Client.’

She said, “I am very happy that I’m still working, that I’m able to get jobs when a lot of people that I started out with are no longer working. I still have a really good time, and as long as that continues I’ll continue to do it.”
