A forgotten script by Tennessee Williams has resurfaced and been turned into a feature film. ‘The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond’ was put to rest 40 years ago when Elia Kazan, who had directed two previous Williams scripts — ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ and ‘Baby Doll’ — abandoned the project to devote his time elsewhere.
The script, according to ComingSoon.net, went into hibernation until now. The new movie is directed by Jodie Markell, who also works as an actress. Markell has helmed one other movie, ‘Why I Live at the P.O.’ (1998), for which she also penned the screenplay.
Filming wrapped in 2008, and it features performances by Bryce Dallas Howard, Chris Evans, Ellen Burstyn and Ann-Margret. Despite the strong cast and script by a multi-award winning and historical writer, there is little hype surrounding the revival of this long-in-coming picture, which will only be released in The United States.
The story takes place in Tennessee Williams’ home town of Memphis during the roaring twenties. The plot follows a headstrong young heiress (Howard) who rebels against proper Southern society by asking her father’s caretaker’s son (Evans) to escort her to the major social events of the season.
At one point Lindsay Lohan was attached to the lead role.
The movie will be released in December of this year.
