TMZ says a copyright infringement lawsuit has been filed against filmmaker Tyler Perry.
The gossip and sensationalist news website says the suit was filed by the personal representative of deceased gospel singer/songwriter Bertha James and that it alleges Perry “lifted an entire verse” from a song written by James for use in his film “Madea Goes to jail.” The song was written in 1950 and isĀ titled “When I Think (of the Goodness of Jesus).”
TMZ says the suit claims Perry stole the verse and used it in the movie, specifically, “incorporating the entire chorus in a monologue delivered by the main character in ‘Madea’ referencing her deliverance from a jail sentence and leniency for repetitive criminal conduct, in a staged court proceeding presided over by ‘Judge Mabeline.’”
The monologue in question actually incorporates the entire song, of which the lyrics are,
“When I think of the goodness of Jesus
And all He’s done for me
My soul, my soul cries out
Hallelu, hallelujah
I thank God for saving me”
James’ estate is also suing Lionsgate Entertainment for unspecified damages.
