Ice Road Truckers: The Motion Picture

There are jobs that Hollywood loves to depict: police officer, doctor, lawyer, athlete, superhero. Then there are jobs that are actually interesting and never get the big screen treatment they deserve.

Jobs like Ice Road Trucker. But that might be about to change.

Max Payne director John Moore has told Deadline that his next film will be a dramatic take on the smash hit History Channel reality TV show Ice Road Truckers. And, he says, he wants to make it in 3D.

The show, which follows the men and women with the dangerous job of transporting 18-wheelers filled with mining equipment across a 350-mile highway made of Canadian ice, has been a hit with viewers since it debuted in 2007.

Now Moore says he and a writer have cracked a storyline for a dramatic feature film that would stay true to the reality of the incredibly difficult (and suspenseful!) job.

“It is very much a tough guy movie,” Moore says. “Here’s a bunch of characters who tackle problems by getting in there and getting things done. We’ll turn it into a mission movie that harkens back to Towering Inferno, Jaws, or The Guns of Navarone. You got a problem, go solve it.”

As the project is just getting off the ground there’s no timetable or cast yet in place, so expect more details to follow.

Riddle Me This: Robin Williams in Batman 3?

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 12:40 pm on

When Batman rises again for his third outing under director Christopher Nolan’s watch, no one is sure just who the Caped Crusader will be squaring off against. In fact, the question as to which member of the Dark Knight’s rogue gallery of villains will bring death, destruction and disaster to the citizens of Gotham City is a hot topic throughout Tinsel Town.

Now, one veteran performer who’s been angling to play a Batman villain for years is already making his pitch to anyone and everyone who’ll listen: Robin Williams wants to play The Riddler.

The 58-year-old funnyman tells Empire magazine he would love to reunite with Nolan on the project. He and the director first worked together on the psychological thriller Insomnia.

“I would work with Chris again in a second, playing anyone in anything,” says Williams. “I’d play The Riddler in the next Batman, although it would be hard to top Heath [Ledger] as the villain, and I’m a little hairy for tights.”
Williams goes so far as to make an appeal to the director. “I’m using this article as an ad,” he says. “Chris, call me, I’ll do anything. I could be a great character – or some weird little man in the background in Arkham Asylum.”

Williams goes on to explain that twice in the past he almost got the call to star in a Batman movie, only to have the part given to someone else. “The Batman films have screwed me twice before” he explains. “Years ago they offered me The Joker and then gave it to Jack Nicholson, then they offered me The Riddler and gave it to Jim Carrey. I’d be like ‘OK, is this a real offer? If it is, then the answer’s yes. Don’t pump me again, motherf—–s.”

Gollum to Play Caesar in Apes Remake

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 12:30 pm on

It’s fashionable in certain circles to trash CGI animation in big sci-fi films as unrealistic, expensive and just not as much fun as back in the days when stuntmen put on big plastic outfits to play world-wrecking monsters. But putting on a motion sensor suit and “acting” in front of a big blue wall isn’t the easiest job in the world.

Which is why Andy Serkis keeps getting work.

Fantasy film fans will remember Serkis as the diminutive actor who brought Gollum/Smeagol to life in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. Though his face was almost completely covered in CG imagery to turn the British actor into the reclusive, ring-obsessed hobbit, Serkis’ body language, expressions and voice brought the character to life.

Since then, Serkis played King Kong in Jackson’s remake of the monster classic and has signed on to reprise a much younger Gollum in The Hobbit. Now EmpireOnline reports that the 46-year-old actor is also set to star as Caesar in the upcoming Planet of the Apes reboot/prequel Rise of the Apes.

The role, played by Roddy McDowell in the original Apes pics, has been tweaked for the new film, with a backstory that finds Caesar as the subject of scientist James Franco’s experiments.

Ape gets experimented on, ape starts to talk, Franco(’s character) freaks and all hell breaks loose. At least, that’s the plot summary we’ve seen. Along with Franco, Freida Pinto and John Lithgow have also joined the cast. Rupert Wyatt is directing.

Shooting on Apes is set to start later this summer in beautiful British Columbia, so the film can be ready for theatres by June 2011.

Bret’s Health Still Fragile

Filed under: Music, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 12:13 pm on

Bret Michaels’ has kept on rocking after a startling number of recent health incidents. But, according to People.com, he’s still got a ways to go before he’s 100 percent.

The 47-year-old Poison frontman, who has Type 1 diabetes, suffered a near-fatal brain haemorrhage in April, and a subsequent “warning” stroke. He has also underwent an emergency appendectomy and was diagnosed with a hole in his heart.

In the aftermath, he is reportedly suffering short-term memory loss, fatigue and “chemical meningitis” (inflammation caused by body scans). During a concert in Mississippi last month, Michaels was also reportedly walking with a slight limp.

“While Bret may be out on the road and performing, he is still not 100 percent,” Janna Elias, V.P. of Michaels Entertainment told People. “He still has pain from the chemical meningitis, short term memory loss and gets fatigued quicker than normal.”

Despite all this, Michaels has performed live, managed to win the title of Donald Trump’s Celebrity Apprentice, and is talking about filling Simon Cowell’s recently vacated judging seat on American Idol.

It might seem like too much too soon. But Elias says that Michaels sees music as something to believe in. He “simply feels that music is a powerful healer.”

Michaels In Talks For Idol Judging Spot

Filed under: Music, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 11:31 am on

Bret Michaels is emerging as a frontrunner to fill the American Idol judging spot left vacant by Simon Cowell – according to Bret Michaels anyway.

The Poison frontman told Parade.com he is in talks with AI bosses about possibly replacing Cowell.

Michaels had previously given a live performance on the show’s finale – his first since suffering a near-fatal brain hemorrhage, followed by a mild stroke –  and he later told the crowd during a Biloxi Miss. Concert “I can’t say this is true yet, cause I don’t know. Next year they asked me to possibly be the judge on American Idol.”

Now he tells Parade, “We have a meeting in L.A. in a couple weeks and we’re going to sit down and talk. They did a poll and I think it was Madonna, P. Diddy, Howard Stern and myself, and I took 50 per cent or 60 per cent of the vote and that’s tremendous. I would love to be a judge on American Idol. I think I would bring a lot to the table.

“I’m not built exactly like Simon Cowell, but, at the same time, I respect what he did. I would have to bring my own personality. I think if they have someone in there to try to imitate Simon, it would be a mistake; he’s an original.”

Meanwhile, AI judge Kara DioGuardi may have chosen Harry Connick Jr. as her favourite. The crooner was a mentor last season and DioGuardi reportedly told ABC’s Nightline she thinks he would make a good Cowell replacement. She said, “The way that he worked with the contestants, he really cared about them. I thought he was really, really great.”

Kanye Sued for Copyright Infringement

Filed under: Music, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 9:31 am on

Kanye West is being sued for copyright infringement, according to Contact Music.

Illinois rapper, Vincent “Vince P.” Peters, is taking legal action against the stage-crashing hip-hop star, alleging Kanye’s hit Stronger is a rip off of Peters’ track of the same name.

P. alleges he sent Kanye’s manager, John Monopoly, a version of his song, Stronger, hoping Monopoly would executive produce the project. He says Yeezy’s track came out seven months later and that the two are strikingly similar.

He apparently waited two years to file a lawsuit which names Roc-A-Fella Records and UMG Recordings as defendants.

X17Online reports that court papers obtained by website EatSleepCelebrity.com allege Kanye’s Stronger “copies significant and important parts of Peters’ lyrics identically or almost identically.”

The documents also reportedly point out that both versions of the song make reference to Kate Moss and both contain the phrases “that which does not kill me makes me stronger,” and “can’t wait much longer.”

The suit seeks unspecified damages and asks that both UMG and Roc-A-Fella be blocked from selling, distributing or having West perform the song. Vince P. also reportedly requests that any remaining copies of the track be destroyed.

Haven’t heard of Vince P.? According to his MySpace, “If you don’t know me you will soon. I hate most of the music that is out right now so I formed my own small indie label called “10th Dimension Records”. I have been written about in a couple celebrity and gossip blogs and oh yeah Im a next 100 Artist of 2008 for URB Magazine.”

Twilight Star to LOL

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 8:59 am on

Maybe it’s just a case of Pattinson-Stewart-Lautner fatigue on the part of Twi-hards everywhere, but the Twilighter getting the most attention these days isn’t Edward, Bella or Jacob, but Alice – a.k.a. hot new starlet Ashley Greene.

The 23-year-old actress is back as Alice Cullen in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the latest installment of the blockbuster series. But, smart cookie that she is, Greene is already looking forward and plotting her next moves as Hollywood’s latest ‘It Girl.’

Deadline reports that Greene has signed on to star in LOL, an American remake of a hit French film with the same title. Greene will star alongside pop star Miley Cyrus and Ashton Kutcher’s wife Demi Moore

The film, a coming of age story set in our modern world of internet gadgets and social networking, will find Greene and Cyrus pitted against one another as mortal enemies.

Lisa Azuelos, who wrote and directed the 2008 original is also helming the remake, a la Michael Haneke’s American remake of his own Funny Games. Shooting, which is taking place in Detroit, is set to begin July 20th.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse opens in theatres nationwide today (June 30).

Michael Douglas Sued by Ex Over Wall Street 2

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 8:58 am on

In Oliver Stone’s 1987 film classic Wall Street, Michael Douglas played Gordon Gekko, a corporate raider with the mantra “Greed is good!” It’s a sentiment the actor no doubt takes issue with in real life.

As Douglas, 65, prepares for this summer’s release of the sequel Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, he’s now being sued by his ex-wife Diandra Douglas, 52.

The New York Post reports that when the couple split in 2000, after 23 years of marriage, Diandra was awarded half of the profits from movies he made while they were together. A provision in the agreement said the same applied to any “spin-offs” of those films.

Now the famous Mr. Douglas is in the position of having to argue that a sequel is not the same thing as a spin-off; and the case has landed the pair back in court.

“It’s the same character, the same title, just years later,” Nancy Chemtob, Diandra’s lawyer told Manhattan Supreme Court. The judge agreed that spin-offs and sequels are different things, but is still trying to determine if the case should be heard in New York, where both Douglases now live – or back in California, where the original judge made his ruling.

Douglas, the star of Wonder Boys, Romancing the Stone and The Streets of San Francisco, is currently married to the gorgeous British actress Catherine Zeta-Jones.

During the divorce trial, Diandra claimed Michael was a sex addict who repeatedly cheated on her. The judge awarded her $45 million in the split.

Jennifer Hudson Speaks About Slayings

Filed under: Music, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 8:49 am on

Jennifer Hudson has spoken publicly about the brutal slayings, a year and a half ago, of her mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew.

“It’s all a blur, it was surreal,” The 28-year-old American Idol Alum said on VH1’s Behind the Music. “It was like I was outside of myself.”

Hudson’s brother in law, William Balfour, was charged with the killings, which happened in October 2008.

She told VH1 that, “For almost two weeks straight . . . [I was] inside one room with just family and friends coming in and out,” she told the VH1 show. “I prayed when I’d get up in the morning and prayed before I lay down at night.”

An Academy Award Winning actress, Hudson also said she turned down a movie role.

“I was like, I have to get adjusted to who I am,” she said. “I can’t be another character if I don’t even know who I am.”

The Behind the Music episode marks one of the first times Hudson has spoken out about the triple murder, according to the New York Daily News. The Oscar-winning actress has stayed quiet on the subject, though she did post a message on her MySpace one month after the tragic event, which said, “I want to thank each and every one of you for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. My sister and I take great comfort and strength from your love and concern.”

She adds that her 11-month-old son with fiancé David Otunga has helped her heal.

David “reminds me of my nephew [Julian],” she said, adding that he “makes me feel like the most special person on Earth. I want him to get the same love and the same upbringing my mother gave us.”

Hudson is set to star in the upcoming Winnie Mandela biopic Winnie.

James Blunt Breaks World Record

Filed under: Music, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 8:41 am on

James Blunt is now officially the world’s highest performer, after delivering a gig on Tuesday June 29th to fans at 42,000 feet, or two miles up in the air. This makes him the official holder of the world record for performance delivered at the highest altitude.  The former record holder is singer Jamiroquai.

According to Metro UK, the singer took off from London’s Stansted airport aboard a Boeing 757 with a back-up band and 150 lucky fans in tow.

James Blunt performed the record breaking gig as part of a contest by the Heart Network, the UK’s largest top 40 commercial radio network. RSA, a British insurance firm, co-sponsored the event.

The Heart Network began their Gig in the Sky contest on June 21, asking listeners to keep their radios tuned throughout the day for a chance to call in. Contestants who got through had to answer three James Blunt-related questions correctly.

Contact music also reports that Blunt, who is buddies with Jamiroquai, was feeling pretty cocky about breaking the record. The Cosmic Girl singer delivered the previous record-breaking gig at 35, 000 feet in 2007.

After the performance was finished, Blunt apparently said “I’m going to ring (Jay Kay) and have a good gloat. I can’t resist.”
