James Blunt is now officially the world’s highest performer, after delivering a gig on Tuesday June 29th to fans at 42,000 feet, or two miles up in the air. This makes him the official holder of the world record for performance delivered at the highest altitude. The former record holder is singer Jamiroquai.
According to Metro UK, the singer took off from London’s Stansted airport aboard a Boeing 757 with a back-up band and 150 lucky fans in tow.
James Blunt performed the record breaking gig as part of a contest by the Heart Network, the UK’s largest top 40 commercial radio network. RSA, a British insurance firm, co-sponsored the event.
The Heart Network began their Gig in the Sky contest on June 21, asking listeners to keep their radios tuned throughout the day for a chance to call in. Contestants who got through had to answer three James Blunt-related questions correctly.
Contact music also reports that Blunt, who is buddies with Jamiroquai, was feeling pretty cocky about breaking the record. The Cosmic Girl singer delivered the previous record-breaking gig at 35, 000 feet in 2007.
After the performance was finished, Blunt apparently said “I’m going to ring (Jay Kay) and have a good gloat. I can’t resist.”
