Mary J. Blige claims to have been accepted at Howard University. Howard University, however, knows nothing about it.
Blige dropped out of high school in grade 11. Not to worry though, because her school, Roosevelt High in Yonkers, New York, recently awarded her an honorary diploma. Now Mary says she has been accepted to Howard University and plans to pursue a Bachelor’s degree.
The R&B singer said in an interview with the New Orleans Time-Picayune, “For the record, I just received my high school diploma yesterday (Monday). The city of New York gave me my high school diploma … and now Howard University has accepted me.” She reportedly made a similar announcement during a concert on ABC’s Good Morning America summer concert series.
Mary did not say in what she intends to major but if she begins attending this year, she will graduate with the class of 2014.
That might be a pretty big “if,” however. The Washington Post followed up its report on the subject by contacting Howard U. The school’s response? “Huh?”
Howard later released a statement that said, “We encourage Ms. Blige to continue her studies and welcome her consideration of Howard University in the future. We are happy to work with Ms. Blige on completing the formal process for admission.”
Howard is a private, historically black University located in Washington D.C. founded in 1866, which played a key role in the civil rights movement of the 1960’s.
Well, even if she’s not entering the hallowed halls of higher learning, Mary will still be busy for now. She has just launched a new perfume, and a new eyewear line is being readied for the fall. She is also currently in intensive French lessons in preparation for her role as Nina Simone in an upcoming biopic. Blige is set portray the legendary “High Priestess of Soul.” The pic begins shooting in France in September.
