Canadian rockers Rush are looking like the Susan Luccis of classic rock after yet another snub from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this week (Get it? It’s an Emmy joke). But the prog pioneers will instead be receiving accolades from both Billboard and Classic Rock magazine.
The trio will be named this year’s Legend of Live at the 2010 Billboard touring awards, at a ceremony to be held in New York City on November 4. The announcement comes on the heels of another that they will be honoured with the “Living Legend” award by Classic Rock. For that one — given to acts for enduring influence and remarkable achievements in the world of rock music — they’ll fly to London to collect the award on November 10.
The Billboard award honours Rush’s commitment to touring and bringing live music to the masses, and comes after more than 35 years of touring nightclubs, concert halls and stadiums.
“With a remarkable body of live work over the years, altering the course of rock music and raising the bar as to what can be done onstage… we think Rush are uniquely deserving of this award,” says Billboard’s executive director of content and programming, touring and live entertainment, Ray Waddell.
“From the early days in the bars and clubs of Toronto to stadiums, amphitheaters and arenas around the world, Rush have epitomized professionalism and the spirit of live rock ‘n roll.”
Lest anyone think this puts Rush’s glory days behind them, Billboard notes that the band has sold more than 2 million tickets in the last five years alone.
Rush will join a list of past recipients that includes Sir Elton John and Ozzy Osbourne.
