Foo Fighters Go Old School for Album, Documentary

Filed under: Music, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 1:03 pm on

When Dave Grohl made the decision that the next Foo Fighters album would be done “old school” few fans could have guessed the extent to which he would take the big idea.

Grohl made the call to record the album not in his studio, but in his garage; and instead of high-falutin’ modern digital machines the tracks were all recorded in good old fashioned analog.

But it’s the folks Grohl brought into the studio to work with him that demonstrate his desire to get back to how he did things in the early days. The former Nirvana drummer brought Nevermind producer Butch Vig in to record the sounds and called-in Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic to play on a track.

The recording sessions in Grohl’s garage have been filmed for a documentary about the recording of the album, to be released as a companion piece to the still-untitled disc.

“In my hotel room in Perth, Australia, on a Them Crooked Vultures tour, it all came to me,” he tells England’s Q magazine. “I was sitting writing a new song and I thought, ‘OK, we should make a documentary about the recording of this new album and make it a history of the band too.

“Rather than just record the album in the most expensive studio with the most state-of-the-art equipment, what if Butch and I were to get back together after 20 years and dust off the tape machines and put them in my garage?’ I literally backed the minivan out of the garage, pulled the lawnmower out, put a drum set in it and set up mics. We soundproofed the garage door so that my neighbors wouldn’t call the f*****g cops.”

Daniel Radcliffe is Britain’s Richest Celeb Under 30

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 12:40 pm on

Daniel Radcliffe has been tagged the “richest British celebrity under the age of 30.” The 21-year-old Harry Potter star is joined in the top 5 of Heat magazine’s list by his two co-stars, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.

The magazine reports that Radcliffe has earned an estimated $72.9 million (all dollars Canadian) over the years, with over $40 million of that stemming from his princely paycheck for The Deathly Hallows parts 1 and 2.

Runner up Keira Knightley has found the treasure buried within the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. The 25-year-old starlet has padded her pockets to the tune of a cool $48.1 million.

Watson and Grint land at spots three and four with $32.9 and $30.4 million respectively. Rounding out the top five is Twilight’s sparkly vampire Robert Pattinson, who makes off with a $29.5 million in blood money.

The magazine’s editor says the list is a reminder that not all rich folks are ancient, greedy, misers. “The Heat rich list is proof that not all mega-rich people are corrupt, cigar-chomping fat cats,” says Sam Delaney. “This list is full of young people who have largely made their cash out of putting smiles on other people’s faces.”

“In these tight financial times, there’s a great deal of animosity felt towards society’s richest. But who could possibly resent the millions earned by a charming young rascal like Daniel Radcliffe?”

Matrix Duo’s New Apocalyptic Drama

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 12:28 pm on

The Wachowskis, the sibling duo behind The Matrix, are planning another massive, sprawling look at an alternate reality with an adaptation of David Mitchell’s post-apocalyptic novel Cloud Atlas.

There had been whispers that Andy and Lana (formerly Larry) Wachowski had been planning to shoot a gay romance based around the war in Iraq, but now Halle Berry has let slip that Cloud Atlas is happening sooner than thought.

The Playlist reports that Berry spilled the beans following a screening of Frankie & Alice for the NAACP Image Awards. “I’m going to do a movie probably in the summer with the Wachowskis,” she told the site.

“A really interesting movie [that is] sort of [like] what they did for The Matrix, they have another really amazing idea that’s sort of gonna stretch our brains even further. And so I’m really excited about that.”

Berry is set to star opposite Natalie Portman and Oscar-winner Tom Hanks in a story that spans continents and centuries, weaving together a tapestry composed of several different, smaller, stories.

The script is being written by Run Lola Run director Tom Tykwer. There had been rumblings Tykwer was set to direct the picture too, but it now appears the Wachowskis may have taken over those duties.

Berry says production on the picture is set to start next summer.

Justin Timberlake Wants An Oscar

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 11:04 am on

Justin Timberlake may be looking to score an EGOT.

Fans of NBC’s 30 Rock know that an EGOT is a fictional acronym created by the show’s Tracy Jordan to describe the feat of winning an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony.

So far, Timberlake has six Grammys and Two Emmy awards under his belt. Now the New York Post reports that the multi-talented star has vowed to do everything in his power to win an Academy Award nomination, putting him that much closer to an Oscar.

Timberlake starred earlier this year in The Social Network, David Fincher’s movie about the creation of Facebook. He played web entrepreneur Sean Parker in the flick, garnering rave reviews for his work.

The Post reports that Sony has agreed to put up the dough to sponsor a big campaign targeted to Hollywood insiders, with the hopes that it could net the pop star a spot on the list of Best Supporting Actor nominees.

“He’s hell-bent on getting a nomination this year even though he has tough competition from his co-star Andrew Garfield,” an anonymous insider tells the paper.

“Sony is footing the bill for advertising the awards campaign, but Justin is also doing things his own way, including attending Academy screenings on his own and privately reaching out to award-winners and Academy darlings Tom Hanks and Kevin Spacey for campaigning advice.”

Oscar nominations for next year’s show will be announced January 25.

Elton John Concert to Help Fight Prop. 8

Filed under: Music, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 10:57 am on

Sir Elton John will perform a concert on Wednesday, January 19 at a private home in Beverly Hills to raise funds for the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER).

AFER is a non profit organization “dedicated to protecting and advancing equal rights for every American,” according to its website, and is the sole sponsor of the federal court challenge of California’s Proposition 8, known as Perry v. Schwarzenegger. Proposition 8 was 2008 ballot initiative that amended the California Constitution to state that “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California,” prohibiting the recognition of same-sex marriages performed on or after November 5, 2008.

AFER will argue its case before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on December 6.

“We are deeply honored to have the support of Sir Elton John,” Chad Griffin, Board President of the American Foundation for Equal Rights, said in a statement. “The American Foundation for Equal Rights stands for the enduring principle that all Americans are created equal, and believes that ending state-sanctioned discrimination is a critical step we must take toward ending the hate crimes and suicides that continue to claim the lives of young Americans.”

The event will be held at the “Green Acres” estate of Ron Burkle.

The statement says Sir Elton John’s performance follows a New York art auction that raised $600,000 for the Foundation that drew support from Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Barbara Bush (daughter of President George W. Bush), and Google Chairman Eric Schmidt. The auction included works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Diane Arbus.

Elton John entered into a civil partnership with his Canadian partner David Furnish in 2005 in London, England.

Hathaway and Franco to Host Oscars

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 9:00 am on

127 Hours star James Franco will pair with Love and Other Drugs‘ Anne Hathaway to host the Oscars this year as the 83rd annual Academy Awards looks to give itself a make-over with some fresh young talent.

Producers of the awards show telecast struggle every year to find a host popular enough to draw in viewers and entertaining enough to keep them tuned in.

“James Franco and Anne Hathaway personify the next generation of Hollywood icons— fresh, exciting and multi-talented,” said the show’s producers, Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer, in a statement.

This year marks the first time in the modern Hollywood era that a pair of relatively young stars will share the stage as emcees of the event. Last year, veteran cut-ups Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin tag-teamed on the gig, taking over from Wolverine star Hugh Jackman, who manned the ship the year before.

Other years have been hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, Chris Rock, David Letterman, Whoopi Goldberg, Chevy Chase and Johnny Carson. Billy Crystal has emceed the show eight times, and the late Bob Hope guided the ceremony a whopping 18 times. Given that the vast majority of hosts have been comedians, Hathaway and Franco are interesting and daring choices.

And the timing of the job couldn’t be better for both actors, who could each find themselves with a nomination this year. Franco is considered almost a sure thing for his chilling performance in 127 Hours while Hathaway is a dark horse contender to score a nod for her work in Drugs.

The 83rd Academy Awards will take place on February 27, 2011, at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

Kevin Smith Casts Lead in Hockey Movie

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 8:59 am on

Funnyman film director Kevin Smith’s next movie should bring a smile to the face of Don Cherry and every other connoisseur of on-ice brawling.

The American director of Clerks and Cop Out, who has long professed a love for a great many things Canadian – from Alanis Morissette to Degrassi Junior High – is currently pulling together the bits and pieces to shoot the shinny satire Hit Somebody.

Smith has announced that Sky High star Nicholas Braund will take the lead in the flick as an on-ice scrapper named Buddy McCracken. Braund recently wrapped Smith’s first horror movie Red State and Smith chose him for the hockey role after losing out on his original choice.

“Seann William Scott wanted to make a hockey movie real f****n’ bad,” Smith explained on the Hollywood Babble-On podcast. “So he went to do another one.”

The “other one” is Goon, a Canadian indie currently shooting in Manitoba with Jay Baruchel joining Scott on the ice.

Like Goon, Hit Somebody is about a hockey player who is just as happy throwing punches as taking shots. With a script by Smith, the story is based on a song by Warren Zevon with lyrics by best-selling author Mitch Albom.

Smith says shooting on Hit Somebody will begin next summer.

Rihanna Sick of Talking About Assault

Filed under: Music, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 8:55 am on

Rihanna is sick of talking about the time she was assaulted, back in 2009, by her then-boyfriend Chris Brown. While she understands that it’s important to address issues of domestic violence, she is also concerned about appearing “bitter” and “spiteful.” And she says it’s others who just won’t drop it and are always pressing her to talk about it.

In a series of tweets posted this week and found via MTV, the singer addressed the issue with a fan when the fan asked the Umbrella singer to stop talking about the infamous incident in interviews, asking “How r people gonna move on?”

“AGREED!” Rihanna replied. “People won’t stop asking about it! It’s f**kin’ annoying! Nobody wants to relive that, but some ppl can’t respect that!

“I get it,” she continued. “They wanna raise awareness to young girls! But it ends up just making me look bitter, pitiful, spiteful and angry!”

Chris Brown also expressed some frustration with the issue when, on Sunday, he sent a message to his and Rihanna’s fans, presumably because they too won’t lay off the subject.

“Y’all starting to sound extremely childish! #teambreezy and #rihannanavy, it’s pointless,” Brown wrote. “Love team breezy & thank you rihannanavy for supporting ya girl.”

Meanwhile, Brown is clearly busy in the recording studio, as he announced in a follow up tweet: “in studio with Dallas Austin making musical history!!!!”

Jared Leto Annoyed with 30STM TV Video Ban

Filed under: Music, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 8:52 am on

Actor and 30 Seconds to Mars rocker Jared Leto is annoyed that his band’s most recent video, Hurricane, has been banned from several U.S. TV networks due to its sexual content.

Leto took to his blog to post a sample letter, which he says is one “out of several,” he received from network people, explaining their decision. The letter offers a timed-coded breakdown and shot by shot explanation:

“04:25 – girl in leather bunny outfit on knees briefly kisses a man
04:40 – man pulls a key on a ribbon chain from his mouth”

These are not the most problematic moments and the letter says that one shot will have to be removed entirely to qualify for even a post 10 pm airing.

Leto, the band’s frontman, spoke to EW’s Music Mix about the ban. “We always knew there would be some images that would have a tough time getting through,” he told them. “But we didn’t expect this kind of pushback that we’re getting now.”

He also said that the Hurricane clip they submitted for TV had already been edited. “I had always planned on having an explicit version and then a version that was not so explicit,” Leto said. “The version that we were trying to get on broadcast is not the explicit version, and that’s still having a really difficult time.”

He added that he’s “not interested in provocation for provocation’s sake” and went on to point out the apparent incongruity between the acceptance of extreme violence and the eschewing of sexuality that has befuddled pundits, probably since media was invented. “I just think it’s interesting that when you turn on the news or whatever else catches your interest, how much violence and negativity is available out there. As soon as it comes time for sexuality, it’s a big shock that people are sexual beings. It’s an interesting double standard to me.”

The video will, of course, be available online.
