NKOTB Star: I’ve Been “Out” for 20 Years

New Kids On the Block star Jonathan Knight says he’s been out of the closet for almost twenty years – he just never thought it was a big deal.

Former teen pop queen Tiffany made waves last week when she appeared to “out” Knight as homosexual during an interview to promote her new sci-fi film. Tiffany dated Knight when they were both young stars during the 1980s.

Though New Kids fans were quick to stick up for the 42-year-old boy-bander, Knight took to the band’s official website to let everyone know he wasn’t upset with Tiffany – nor was he living in denial.

“To all my fans who have expressed concern: I have never been outed by anyone but myself,” Knight writes. “I did so almost twenty years ago. I never knew that I would have to do it all over again publicly just because I reunited with NKOTB! I have lived my life very openly and have never hidden the fact that I am gay. Apparently the prerequisite to being a gay public figure is to appear on the cover of a magazine with the caption, ‘I am gay’.”

Knight went on to say that his private life is private – and that’s just the way he wants it. “I love living my life being open and honest, but at this time I choose not to discuss my private life any further! My fellow band members don’t discuss their private lives with their loved ones and I don’t feel that just because I am gay, I should have to discuss mine!”

The New Kids On the Block recently announced an upcoming tour with fellow grown-ups The Backstreet Boys.

Bon Jovi to Take Two Year Hiatus

Filed under: Music, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 2:43 pm on

New Jersey rock legends Bon Jovi plan to take a hiatus from the road just as soon as their globe-spanning Circle tour comes to an end.

Rolling Stone reports that the rockers revealed during a conference call with reporters that the band has decided to take some much needed time to recharge their batteries following what’s grown to be their biggest, highest-grossing tour ever.

Bon Jovi was the top-drawing concert tour of 2010, bringing in more than $146.5 million with shows around the world.

But now drummer Tico Torres says fans are going to have to live without the boys for more than just a little while.

“Sometimes you need to get away so people can appreciate you better,” Torres said.  “The best thing I can tell you is we’re gonna need a couple years off for sure.”

Torre’’ sentiment was seconded by guitarist Richie Sambora, who added that while the band will be out of the public eye, they’ll continue to create new music together.

“We’re gonna keep on going and writing new, great songs, go in the studio and make great records, evolve more and get back into stadiums and give people a great, great show.”

Lead singer Jon Bon Jovi won’t be pulling a complete disappearing act however. The frontman just signed on for a starring role in the upcoming romantic comedy New Year’s Eve.

Javier Bardem to Star as Bond Villain?

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 2:06 pm on

Is Javier Bardem set to play the next great nemesis of legendary British secret agent James Bond?

That’s the rumour swirling about Hollywood following word that Bond producers have approached Bardem with an offer for a starring role in the next 007 flick.

Though little is known about the part, speculation has been reaching a fever pitch following a report from Deadline that producers were intent on nabbing the No Country For Old Men star for a major role in what will be the 23rd Bond picture. The industry website points out that “traditionally the biggest male role opposite 007 is the villain.”

Now that MGM has its money situation more or less together, it’s all systems go on production for the movie that was put on hiatus last year. Daniel Craig is set to return as the dashing and debonair spy for Her Majesty’s Secret Service, while Dame Judi Dench will return as M.

American Beauty director Sam Mendes will be in the director’s seat, but other than that little is known about the follow-up to 2008’s Quantum of Solace.

James Bond’s 23rd adventure is set to hit theatres on November 9, 2012.

It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s Henry Cavill!

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 1:45 pm on

Superman, Batman and Spider-Man may be three of America’s greatest heroes, but now the crime-fighters have something else in common too: All three will be played by British actors on the big screen.

Henry Cavill, of the TV series The Tudors, has been chosen to tie on the red cape and star as the Man of Steel in the upcoming blockbuster Superman.

The Wrap reports that Cavill impressed director Todd Snyder and producer Chris Nolan, even though he had auditioned for Nolan once before – and lost the part of Batman to fellow Brit Christian Bale.

“In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen,” Snyder said in a statement. “I also join Warner Bros. in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”

Warner’s is eyeing a December 2012 release for the first Superman movie since 2006’s Superman Returns. The studio viewed that film – which starred Brandon Roth in the title role – as a failure despite its $390 million dollar gross.

The Wrap reports that Cavill, who stars as Charles Brandon on The Tudors, will soon be seen in the upcoming Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver action flick The Cold Light of Day.

Fellow Brit Andrew Garfield will star as Spider-Man in Sony’s upcoming reboot of that superhero franchise.

Win Best Actress – Get Divorced!

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 1:34 pm on

Someone tell Sandra Bullock she’s not alone!

A new study has revealed that stars who win the Oscar for Best Actress are at a greater risk for divorce than their non-winning, co-nominees.

The study, conducted by researchers at Toronto’s Rotman School of Management and Carnegie Mellon University, found that while Best Actor winners tend to stay married about as long as Best Actor losers, Best Actress winners have shorter marriages than those who don’t take home the trophy.

The researchers posit that the statistical anomaly is connected to wider social issues regarding the success of women in the workplace.

“Research has shown that, in the general population, gender differences have historically given roles with greater power and status to men and roles with lesser status and power to women” says Tiziana Casciaro, assistant professor of organizational behaviour at the Rotman School, who co-authored the study.

“It appears that even the marriages of Hollywood actresses at the top of their careers are not immune to the consequences of violating social norms that affect the wider population. Our results suggest that the sudden success reduces the longevity of their marriages,” adds co-author Colleen Stuart.

The researchers studied the life-stories of the 751 nominees for Best Actor and Best Actress since 1936 and discovered there’s a 63% chance that Best Actress winners will find themselves in divorce court earlier than their co-nominees.

The study found that the average length of a Best Actress winners marriage was 4.3 years, compared to 9.5 years for non-winning nominees.

Last year, Sandra Bullock made headlines when her marriage to Jesse James fell apart almost immediately following her Best Actress win for her role in The Blind Side. Others whose unions have collapsed following their wins include Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Halle Berry and Kate Winslet.

Adam Sandler to Play 800lb Man?

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 9:00 am on

Adam Sandler may soon be strapping on a big foam fat suit to play an 800 pound man who falls in love in the comedy Fat Man.

FirstShowing reports that Cedar Rapids director Miguel Arteta spoke to the site at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, where he revealed that he hopes his next project will be the long-gestating story about a morbidly obese man who loses 600lbs after falling in love.

“I’d love to do a movie with Adam Sandler that… someone said he was flirting with. It’s called Fat Man,” Arteta said. “One of the main writers of The Simpsons wrote the script and it’s amazing. He would play an 800lbs guy who has a love affair between him and his nurse. And he’s naked for the first half of the film… and it’s very touching… and it’s very funny.”

The Simpsons writer in question is Mike Reiss, who wrote the script way back at the start of the last decade that was picked up by Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions in 2003.

No word from Sandler if Fat Man is indeed on his radar. The funnyman just wrapped the romantic comedy Just Go With It with Jennifer Aniston. He’ll also provide the voice of a wise-cracking monkey in Kevin James’ upcoming comedy The Zookeeper.

Transformers Scribes Script Ender’s Game

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 8:58 am on

The Hollywood scribes behind the first two blockbuster Transformers movies and the sci-fi smash Star Trek are now pitching a big screen adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel Ender’s Game.

Screen Rant reports that screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are teaming with X-Men Origins: Wolverine director Gavid Hood and production company Odd Lot to sell their take on Orson Scott Card’s futuristic fantasy.

Orci took to the social networking website Twitter to reveal the news over the weekend, writing: “Ender’s Game! Us(K/O), Oddlot, and Gavin Hood taking his amazing script to the town! Who wants some?”

It’s the first time the writing tag-team has been associated with the project.

Hollywood has been eyeing the 25-year-old book for quite some time. Card’s story tells of a futuristic earth where humans are locked in mortal combat with an insectoid race of aliens.

The team is said to be hoping for a 2013 release for the movie.

Filed under: Music, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 11:35 pm on

Madonna is using that brilliant business mind again. The Material Girl plans to cash in on the success of Glee, according to reports, and get the cast of the smash-hit musical TV show to support her next world tour.

The star’s music was featured in a tribute episode of the Fox program, titled The Power of Madonna, which aired in April 2010. According to Digital Spy, she’s hoping to incorporate live performances based on that episode into her touring show later this year.

A source reportedly told the News of the World, “Madonna wants to break records and make her career bigger than ever. And because the Glee episode featuring her music was such a hit, there are plans for the cast to appear.

“She is in amazing shape for her age but this could be her last big world tour she does for a while as she wants to concentrate on business ventures.”

Madonna’s Sticky & Sweet tour, which ran between 2008 and 2009, was the highest-grossing tour ever for a solo artist. Currently, the veteran pop star is plotting the release of her second directorial effort of a feature film. W.E. tells the story of King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson.

Bruno Mars Escapes Conviction Record For Cocaine Bust

Bruno Mars is a lucky guy. Not only is he fast becoming one of music’s hottest stars, he also won’t have a conviction on his record for his Las Vegas cocaine arrest last September.

TMZ reports that the Just The Way You Are singer agreed to a “deferred adjudication” deal with the Clark County District Attorney’s Office, meaning that if he stays out of trouble for 12 months and completes his community service, it’s like it never happened.

Mars was arrested in September at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, after a bathroom attendant caught him and told security there was a man in a stall doing drugs.

He will do 200 hours of community service and undergo private counselling. At the end of the 12-month period, the felony will be officially dismissed.

Meanwhile, Mars has been nominated for several awards at the upcoming Grammys. Nothin’ On You, his collaboration with rapper B.o.B., is up for Record of the Year, F*** You, which Mars co-wrote for Cee Lo Green is up for Song of the Year, and Mars’ single Just the Way You Are has a shot at Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

Mars’ album Doo Wops & Hooligans topped the HMV Canada CD sales chart for the week ending January 29, 2011.
