Justin Bieber & Ashton Kutcher: Co-Stars!

Is Canadian teen pop sensation Justin Bieber already plotting a return to the big screen?

After scoring a blockbuster-sized success with his 3D concert doc Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, the Stratford, Ontario native is apparently eyeing a starring role in the upcoming Ashton Kutcher comedy What Would Kenny Do?

The Los Angeles Times reports that The Bieb is very interested in starring in the comedy about a 17-year-old who somehow befriends the thirtysomething version of himself. Bieber and Kutcher would thus be playing the same character, with some twenty years between them.

Will Smith’s production company Overbrook Entertainment is said to be involved in the project which has been set up at Sony.

Word is the only hang-up is Bieber’s extensive international touring schedule. Producers had hoped to shoot Kenny this year, but being one of the world’s most popular pop stars comes with a very busy schedule, and a starting date of early 2012 is now being looked at.

Bieber proved his box-office muscle with Never Say Never, which grossed over $70 million at the U.S. box office, beating out Michael Jackson’s This Is It as the top grossing concert film of all time.

Jay-Z Investigated by NBA

Filed under: Music, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 3:49 pm on

The NBA has confirmed it is investigating hip-hop superstar Jay-Z over a visit this past weekend to the dressing room of a college basketball team.

Jay-Z, real name Shawn Carter, is part-owner of NBA franchise the New Jersey Nets. CBS Sports reports that Carter visited players belonging to the Kentucky Wildcats after they defeated North Carolina this past Sunday at the Nets home arena in Newark.

The professional basketball league prohibits team officials from having any contact with college players not yet eligible for the NBA draft. Now NBA spokesman Tim Frank has confirmed to the Associated Press that the league is looking into the possible rule violation.

It will be difficult for the rapper to prove the visit didn’t happen, as there are numerous photos and videos of his appearance in the dressing room.

Basketball insiders say the situation is similar to that of Boston Celtics GM Danny Ainge, who infamously sat with player Kevin Durant’s mom in the stands during the 2007 Big 12 tournament. Ainge received a $30,000 fine for his infraction of the rule.

Scary Spawn Sequel Surprise?

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 3:20 pm on

Comic book legend Todd McFarlane says that for the upcoming Spawn reboot he plans on getting behind the camera himself, to direct his own creation.

The artist tells My DVD Insider that his goal is to write, direct and produce a brand new feature film, reintroducing his anti-hero to the big screen. Black Dynamite star Michael Jai White played Spawn in his last theatrical adventure back in 1997.

Now McFarlane, who created Spawn in 1992, says that protracted studio battles over a potential sequel have led him to conclude that the only way to get the movie done is to do it himself.

“There’s only one way a studio is going to say yes, that’s if it’s a low-budget movie,” he tells the site. “To be honest, as a producer, even I wouldn’t hire myself to direct a big-budget film. There are smarter people out there. But if you’re making it for $10 million to $12 million, you’re just going to go get some schmuck director so let me be the schmuck.”

McFarlane says his plans for the reboot are to strip things down to their basics and explore the essence of the character.

“In this new version, there are no supervillains, archenemies or any of that,” he says. “It’s just a spook movie, something scary going bump in the night. I think I can shoot that for almost next to nothing.”

McFarlane says that while there’s no production date just yet, he’s been working on the script for the new Spawn flick since 2009.

Katy Perry Scores 4th #1 Off Teenage Dream

Filed under: Music, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 2:59 pm on

Katy Perry’s latest single has made her the first woman in twenty years to score four number one hits off the same album.

Perry’s E.T. overtook Lady Gaga’s Born This Way to land at the top spot of this week’s Billboard Hot 100. Born This Way had sat at number one for the past six weeks.

E.T. is just the latest smash from Perry’s second album Teenage Dream, which has also spawned the hits California Gurls, Teenage Dream and Firework.

The last woman to pull off such a feat was Mariah Carey, who scored four top hits off her debut, self-titled album back in 1990/91.

The only other artist to manage the same success in the past decade has been R&B heartthrob Usher, who notched four number ones off his 2004 album Confessions.

“I am so thrilled that E.T. has landed at number one,” Perry tells Billboard. “I want to thank all the fans who contributed to this amazing feat and radio, which has been an essential part of my continued existence. I truly appreciate all the support of my creative twists and turns.”

Colin Firth Talks a Good Gambit

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 2:53 pm on

Oscar-winning actor Colin Firth says he’s excited about the prospect of starring in a remake of the Michael Caine, Shirley MacLaine heist flick Gambit, but says it shouldn’t be called a remake.

Firth, who starred in Best Picture winner The King’s Speech, tells Empire Online that the Gambit script – written by the Coen Brothers – is laugh-out-loud  funny.

“It’s out there, it’s a farce, it’s a caper movie, it’s not a romantic comedy,” he tells the movie site. “And it’s rare to read things that make you laugh. I need to do something that does…I think it’s a highly intelligently crafted piece.”

But the star says he’s a bit confused as to why the Coens and director Michael Hoffman insist that the film is a remake of the 1966 original.

“It’s been called a remake – I don’t quite understand why it’s been styled as a remake. The original Gambit was a lot of fun, but really this doesn’t resemble it. If you were to change the names of the characters I think you could get away with calling it [original].”

Fans of Firth can look forward to seeing the star next grace the silver screen in the upcoming spy flick Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Gambit isn’t expected to hit theatres in 2012.

Chris Hemsworth Too Big for Thor Costume

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 8:53 am on

When Chris Hemsworth was ordered to bulk up for his role as Norse God Thor for the upcoming Marvel superhero flick, the hunky young star reportedly went too far, getting so big his costume needed to be resized.

The broad-shouldered 27-year-old Australian tells the Los Angeles Times that when he first won the role in Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming blockbuster he was intimidated by the comic book sized muscles of the hero.

“I got the part and immediately started looking at the comic books, and the guy is 500 pounds or something and looks like Schwarzenegger,” Hemsworth tells the paper. “And I thought, ‘OK, I’m not gonna get to that.’ But I have to get bigger. (The filmmakers) kept saying ‘Yeah, get as big as you can, as big as you can.’”

But the star says the problems began when he returned from the gym and attempted to slip back into his skin-tight costume.

“I came back right before Christmas, just before we started the movie, and had a final sort of camera test and put the costume on and within a couple of minutes, my hands started going numb. “Everyone was like, ‘Yeah, that’s not cool.’ And I started getting pins and needles and you’d touch the skin and the blood wouldn’t return to that area so quick. And I thought, ‘OK, it doesn’t fit’.”

Hemsworth says last minute alterations to the costume were ordered, while he was advised to pull back from his intense work out routines.

Thor, tight suit and all, lands in theatres May 6.

Ridley Scott Creating Gertrude Bell Biopic

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 8:48 am on

Once Ridley Scott comes back from outer space, the veteran Hollywood director wants to make his next picture a bit more down to earth.

Scott, who is currently busy putting together his upcoming sci-fi blockbuster Prometheus, is also staking a future claim on the story of pivotal historical figure Gertrude Bell.

Deadline reports that Scott has hired Constant Gardener screenwriter Jeffrey Caine to develop the story of Bell and her Middle Eastern adventures for a big screen biopic.

Born in England in 1868, Bell was an archaeologist and diplomat, and an instrumental figure in Arab politics. A contemporary of T.E. Lawrence (of Arabia), Bell played a central role in the creation of modern Iraq. She died in Baghdad in 1926.

Scott reportedly views the project as a huge opportunity for the right actress to tackle a strong and complicated role, something the director has favoured ever since Sigourney Weaver first kicked in a door in Alien.

Empire Online reports that one person likely not thrilled with Scott’s plans will be acclaimed European filmmaker Werner Herzog. The Rescue Dawn director has reportedly been developing his own take on Bell’s story, with Naomi Watts playing the part.

Chris Brown Has First No. 1 Album

Filed under: Music, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 8:36 am on

You know what they say about publicity…

Chris Brown has achieved his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart. His fourth studio album, F.A.M.E. has debuted at the top with 270,000 sold according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The success is despite, or perhaps because of, the controversy that has surrounded Brown over the last couple of weeks.

First he made headlines for a recent Good Morning America appearance during which he dodged repeated questions about his 2009 assault on then girlfriend Rihanna, and after which he reportedly threw a tantrum and allegedly broke a window in his dressing room. Following the incident, he appeared on Dancing With The Stars, a move that was widely criticized by people who thought he should not have been booked on the show.

F.A.M.E. is Brown’s fourth top 10 album and marks the singer’s second-best sales week.

Rihanna Reveals Childhood Abuse

Filed under: Music, Sympatico, Uncategorized — D.I.S.H. @ 8:32 am on

Rihanna has opened up about the abuse she says she suffered at the hands of her father.

The pop superstar, who was famously assaulted by then-boyfriend Chris Brown in 2009, tells Rolling Stone she grew up the victim of physical abuse committed by her dad. Rihanna tells the magazine that, despite the violence, she understands where it comes from.

“I actually feel really bad for my father,” Rihanna says. “He was abused too – he got beat up by his stepdad when he was young. He has resentment toward women, because he felt like his mom never protected him, and unfortunately, my mother was the victim of that.”

Even so, the star says that doesn’t excuse his actions.

“I’m not giving him excuses. Right is right and wrong is wrong. I still blame him. But I understand the source.”

The 23-year-old Barbadian says she can remember one particular incident like it was yesterday.

“He slapped me so hard. I ran home with his handprint on me. I couldn’t believe it. My mother saw my face, how traumatized I was.”

The star even opens up about her public response to the assault she suffered at the hands of Brown.

“I put my guard up so hard,” she recalls. “I didn’t want people to see me cry. I didn’t want people to feel bad for me. It was a very vulnerable time in my life, and I refused to let that be the image. I wanted them to see me as, ‘I’m fine, I’m tough.’ I put that up until it felt real.”

Eric Clapton Home Sale will Benefit Japan Relief

The former home of legendary rocker Eric Clapton is being sold and anything over the market price will be given to disaster relief in earthquake and tsunami-ravaged Japan.

A Japanese businessman is selling the Venice Beach property designed by famed Japanese architect Arata Isozaki. The house is the only private residence Isozaki has ever designed.

According to La.Curbed.com, the price tag on the house is expected to be in the $2.5 million range.

Of particular interest to rock and roll collectors, the sale of the home includes a never released solo recording Clapton left behind when he moved out back in 2003. The former Yardbird had lived in the house, which includes custom furniture designed by Getty Museum artist Ronald Bennett, for five years.

Other ways for music fans to contribute to Japan disaster relief include the We Pray for Japan bracelets designed and sold by Lady Gaga which have already raised over a quarter of a million dollars, and the special album Songs for Japan which is available for download from iTunes.

See the house here.
