Rosie-Huntington Whiteley Thought Transformers Offer Was a Joke

June 30, 2011

Michael Bay says when he first suggested Rosie Huntington-Whiteley audition for a role in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, the young starlet thought he was joking.

The T3 director tells Britain’s Evening Standard he was stunned by Huntington-Whiteley when he first saw her on the set of a Victoria’s Secret commercial he was filming.

“Out of 500 women around the world there was something about her,” Bay tells the paper. “I didn’t think I’d ever, ever hire a model and there was just something about her.”

Bay says he was so impressed by the 24-year-old’s beauty he personally pursued her to replace Megan Fox in the franchise.

“When I was talking to her and I said ‘Would you ever want to get into movies’ and she said ‘I’d love to’ so I wrote her an email,” he recalls. “I said this could be a life changing thing, these emails don’t really happen much in life and would you be interested in auditioning for me and she thought I was joking.

“But she did a really good job. She comes off as really sincere. She’s got a lot of natural talent.”

Transformers: Dark of the Moon opened everywhere this week.

Counting Crows Frontman Weaning Himself of Drugs, Continues to Struggle with Mental Illness

Filed under: Music, Rock, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 2:17 pm on

June 30, 2011

Counting Crows lead singer Adam Duritz continues to struggle with mental illness and is trying to wean himself off the medication he has been using to cope. But he couldn’t do that while recording.

Duritz has been posting about his condition on the band’s Facebook page (found via EW) and just this week provided fans with an update on his efforts to kick the medication he was prescribed to battle his recurring mental issues. The singer writes that he had been weaning himself off the meds until a recent return to the studio.

“I stopped dropping the meds dosages for recording,” Duritz writes. “Couldn’t shake uncontrollably & sing at the same time. Forgivable. But…I got home. Docs Friday instructions: cut Lithium dose in half… not so good now. Gotta keep pushing/get off this s***. Going faster than I should but it still takes too long. All my friends say how clear & present I am. ‘Clear & present.’ Horror. Not mutually exclusive.”

Duritz writes that he wants to make clear that his issues aren’t related to addiction, so much as the side-effects of withdrawal.

He says, “Just to clarify: I will not be leading any kind of ’sober life’ after this. These are not drug addiction problems. I was f***ing crazy. I needed meds. I took meds. Now I’m less crazy. I need less meds. I’m stopping meds. That’s it. These meds just happen to have some freaking vicious withdrawal symptoms when you stop so [you] can’t do it all at once. Oh…and I like drinking. A lot. Sober=not for me.”

Lynyrd Skynyrd Getting to Work on Next Album

Filed under: Music, Rock, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 2:02 pm on

June 30, 2011

Legendary rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd say they’re heading back into the studio to record their latest album of Southern fried rock and roll.

Lead singer Johnny Van Zant tells Billboard that the band, which has been churning out classic rock since the 1960s, has been writing songs for the album about the same things Skynyrd has always stood for.

“We’re getting about to the end of the writing part,” Van Zant says. “If it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it. We write about things that we’ve done or things that have happened to people around us. It’s for the common people, people who have made this great country of ours. That’s what the heck I say we always write about.”

The new album follows 2009’s God & Guns, which marked a difficult period for the group.

“Yeah, we had a weird time doing that record because we lost our bass player, Ean Evans, and [keyboardist] Billy Powell at the same time,” he says. “To pull that one off took all of our energy and our spirits and our beliefs and everything, so we’re hoping with this one we just have their spirits with us.”

In addition to the new album, the band is also excited about the upcoming opening of the Lynyrd Skynyrd BBQ & Beer restaurant in Las Vegas’ Excalibur Hotel & Casino.

“It’s been in the works for about a year now, and they just broke ground about a month ago,” Van Zant says. “It’s kind of between the Luxor and Excalibur, so it’s right here on the strip in a pretty good spot. We hope that when bands come through they’ll go and visit and it’ll be a place to hang out. It should be a cool thing.”

Disneyland Ride The Matterhorn to The Big Screen

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 1:56 pm on

June 30, 2011

We’ve taken four trips with the Pirates of the Caribbean and had a spin around the Haunted Mansion. Now Disney wants audiences to take a ride down the Matterhorn.

A beloved ride also known as the Matterhorn Bobsleds, The Matterhorn has been a part of Disneyland’s Fantasyland since 1959, after Walt Disney himself ordered a toboggan-themed coaster for the park following a trip to Switzerland.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that plans for the movie call for a thriller centering on a team of five young explorers who encounter the gigantic and mysterious supernatural beasts the Yeti on their way back down from the mountain’s peak.

Screenwriter Jason Dean Hall is already at work on the script, which has the working title The Hill.

Disney is still big on the idea of producing more movies based on their theme park rides. Another Haunted Mansion movie is already in the works, produced by fantasy auteur Guillermo del Toro, while David Fincher is set to direct a reboot of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Meanwhile, Iron Man director Jon Favreau and novelist Michael Chabon are already plotting out The Magic Kingdom, an upcoming feature in which the entire theme park comes to life, Night at the Museum style.

Madonna Movie Gets Oscar-Ready Release Date

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 1:48 pm on

June 30, 2011

Is Madonna hoping for an Oscar?

The pop star’s new movie W.E. has been given a plum release date by distributor The Weinstein Company that suggests the company is optimistic about its award chances.

EW reports the picture will open in New York and Los Angeles on December 9, before rolling out for a wider release in mid-January – a scheduling tactic often taken by pictures angling for attention come Oscar-time.

The Material Girl co-wrote, produced and directed, but doesn’t appear in, the quasi-historical drama which tells the tale of two love stories, one being the infamous romance between Britain’s King Edward VIII and American divorcee Wallis Simpson, with led to Edward’s abdication, the other being a modern romance in New York City.

The picture stars Abbie Cornish, Andrea Riseborough, James D’Arcy and Oscar Isaac.

“Madonna beautifully interweaves past and present in W.E. It’s a very smart film, and a stunning feature directorial debut,” says Harvey Weinstein. “I’m incredibly excited about this movie and I wanted to give it a prominent release date.

Sneezing Baby Panda: The Motion Picture

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 1:37 pm on

June 30, 2011

A popular viral video of a baby panda sneezing is headed to the big screen as the feature comedy The Life and Times of Sneezing Baby Panda.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the picture will be a mockumentary about an Australian zoologist who hopes she can save her financially troubled zoo by finding the adorable – and famous – sneezing baby panda from the clip.

The picture is being produced by Australian documentarians Lesley Hammond and Jenny Walsh, the makers of 10 actual documentaries about pandas. In fact, it was Hammond and Walsh who filmed the video that later became the viral sensation.

“Honestly, we were feeling a bit pissed off but then we realized that we’d accidentally been given a star,” Hammond tells the Reporter. The Sneezing Baby Panda clip has been used on the TV shows South Park and 30 Rock and on the big screen in Drew Barrymore’s Going the Distance and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.

Hammond and Walsh say their big idea is to take the Forrest Gump approach and insert the Sneezing Baby Panda footage into Chinese historical footage.

“One panda’s a terracotta warrior. Another’s on the Long March,” says Hammond.  “You know the famous photo of Nixon sitting with Mao? Using visual effects, we’ll replace the woman interpreter sitting between them with a panda.”

The producers, who are currently casting for the actor to play the documentarian at the centre of the story, say the marketing for the picture should take care of itself.

“After all, it’ll be easy since this is the first feature film to come out of a viral video clip.”

Chuck Berry Statue Gets Go-Ahead Despite Opposition

Filed under: Music, Rock, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 10:25 am on

June 30, 2011

An eight-foot statue of rock and roll pioneer Chuck Berry has been approved in St. Louis, Missouri, despite opposition from some locals, including one who said the Hall of Famer is a “felon and not a friend of women.”

Reuters reports that the University City council, which has jurisdiction over the spot where the statue is to be installed, rejected a last-minute petition to block or delay the statue, which depicts a young Berry wailing away on his guitar.

The leader of the opposition, Elsie Glickert, an 86-year-old former city council member, says the statue should not be placed on public property because of Berry’s past convictions.

In 1959, Berry was arrested under the Mann Act after an allegation that he had sex with a 14-year-old Native American girl whom he had transported over state lines to work as a hat check girl at his club. He was convicted in 1962 and sentenced to three years in prison, of which he served one and a half.

“This man is a felon and not a friend of women. It is a misuse of tax dollars to honor him on public property,” Glickert said.

Berry, 84, was also convicted of armed robbery as a teen and of tax evasion In 1979.

The statue will be installed this week and dedicated at a July 29 ceremony.

Filed under: Music, Rock, Sympatico, Uncategorized — D.I.S.H. @ 9:14 am on

June 30, 2011

Motley Crue frontman Vince Neil will be honoured with a lifetime achievement award.

The singer will be handed the Lifetime Achievement in Rock ‘n’ Roll prize at the Vegas Rocks! Magazine Awards in August, according to Starpulse.

Publisher Sally Steele says, “There is no one that deserves it more than Vince. Vince has done so much over the years for charity since he has lived here in Las Vegas… We are also planning on having a secret special guest present Vince’s award to him with me, so stay tuned!”

The ceremony will take place at the Las Vegas Hilton on August 21st.

In 1995, Neil’s daughter Skylar Neil, died of cancer at the age of 4 and he founded the Skylar Neil Memorial Fund in her honor. The foundation has reportedly donated millions of dollars to The T.J. Martell Foundation, and it sponsors an annual golf tournament to raise money for children with cancer.

Neil also hosts events for MUSIC for RELIEF, an organization with a mission to support disaster relief.

The rocker has also had legal troubles, however. In 1984 he crashed his car while drunk driving, killing Hanoi Rocks drummer Nicholas Dingley. He has since been arrested for assault more than once and most recently was arrested on suspicion of DUI in 2010.

Tom Cruise Turned to Jon Bon Jovi for Rock of Ages Help

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 8:59 am on

June 30, 2011

Jon Bon Jovi has revealed that when Tom Cruise needed help to find his inner rocker, he turned to his rock and roll star buddy.

Cruise plays hair-metal rocker Stacee Jaxx in the upcoming big screen adaptation of the smash hit Broadway musical Rock of Ages, and when it came time to belt out the Bon Jovi hit Wanted Dead or Alive, he wanted advice from the man himself.

“He and I actually went out and he was very intense about ‘How do you do this?’” Bon Jovi tells Extra.

The veteran rocker says he told the Hollywood star he had nothing to worry about.

“I said, ‘Relax man, you’re Tom Cruise,’” Bon Jovi recalls. “‘You can learn how to sing a song, don’t worry about it.’”

Since their meeting, Bon Jovi admits he hasn’t actually heard Cruise’s final effort – though he’s convinced the actor did a stellar job.

“I’m confident that Tom Cruise singing Wanted Dead or Alive will be in the trailer.”

Rock of Ages, starring Cruise, Julianne Hough, Russell Brand and Diego Boneta rocks theatres everywhere June 1, 2012.
