Alice Cooper Will Play Himself in Dark Shadows

October 31, 2011

Alice Cooper is known for his fondness for spooky things – which is no doubt the reason the classic rocker has already shot a cameo for Tim Burton’s upcoming Dark Shadows.

Based on the cult classic 1960s television series, Dark Shadows will star Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green and Helena Bonham Carter. Until recently the big screen adaptation was shooting at England’s famous Pinewood Studios on sets that included a gigantic gothic mansion and a haunted harbor.

“They should take that set and make it a haunted house next year,” Cooper says.

According to a report on AliceCooper.com, the rocker will play himself in the flick, which is set in 1972. Word is the scene has Depp’s Barbabas Collins hiring Cooper to play a gig at his mansion.

Cooper has graced the silver screen before, with cameos in Nightmare on Elm Street: Freddy’s Dead, Prince of Darkness and of course Wayne’s World.

The rocker says the world’s of rock and horror are a natural pairing.

“Rock and horror and comedy work together, that’s something I’ve known a long time and people like Rob Zombie know, and Burton knows that too,” Cooper says.

“You can’t do horror and rock with a punchline in a way. There’s the absurd stuff and there’s just that delivery of the ’Oh!’ moment that is like a punchline. I just saw ‘Final Destination 5′ and I was laughing so hard. I mean, it was Wile E. Coyote, all these elaborate things leading up to this moment of impact… there’s something like that in our shows, too. Hitchcock would do it too. There’s the setup, the misdirect and then the delivery. Tim Burton knows it so well. He’s one of a kind. He’s a kindred spirit.”

Dark Shadows will fall onto screens everywhere May 11, 2012.

Activists Angry with Relativity Media Shoot in Chinese City

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 2:53 pm on

October 31, 2011

Relativity Media, the production company behind such Hollywood hits as Bridesmaids and The Social Network, has attracted the scorn of activists following its decision to shoot a movie in the Chinese city of Linyi.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Relativity shot the comedy 21 and Over — a co-production with China — in Linyi.

Activists say Linyi is home to “prominent blind civil rights activist and lawyer” Chen Guangchen. Guangchen’s supporters say he has been beaten and subjected to unlawful house arrest by authorities since 2005.

A number of prominent human rights groups, including Human Rights Watch, have condemned Relativity’s decision to do business with Chinese officials said to be directly involved in the case of Guangchen. The Wrap reports that the groups intend to ask people to boycott the film.

A writer named “C. Custer” posted an open letter on the Chinese blog Weibo, blasting Relativity’s decision.

“Those same local officials praising your decision to come to Linyi are probably the ones paying teams of thugs to surround Chen Guangcheng’s village and beat anyone who tries to get near it,” Custer writes. “You know that they’re the ones who’ve been holding an innocent man and his family hostage, without charges or any kind of legal proceedings.”

A recent press release about 21 and Over included a quote from local Communist party secretary Zhang Shajun praising the project. THR says Shajun is said to be directly involved in Guangcheng’s oppression.

Relativity has responded to the controversy by issuing a statement in defense of their business practices.

“We stand by that commitment and we are proud of our growing business relationships in China… As a company, we believe deeply that expanding trade and business ties with our counterparts in China and elsewhere can result in positive outcomes.”

21 and Over features American actors Miles Teller, Sarah Wright and Justin Chon.

Justin Timberlake Mistaken for George Michael’s Date

Filed under: Music, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 2:35 pm on

October 31, 2011

Justin Timberlake hit it off with George Michael after the two singers met at Michael’s Royal Albert Hall concert in London this past weekend – but not in the way some observers imagined.

England’s Daily Mirror reports that Timberlake and Michael were so buddy-buddy following Saturday night’s show that some mistook the “SexyBack” star for a potential suitor.

“Loads of young good looking guys were hanging off George, trying to chat him up but he wasn’t having any of it,” an anonymous insider reportedly tells the paper. “Hilariously, when JT went over to chat to him, two men flounced off, failing to recognize Justin and thinking he was George’s latest conquest.”

Things almost became heated when one wannabe suitor took offense to Timberlake’s presence.

“One made a bitchy comment about JT only being after George for his money and was glaring at him menacingly all evening, threatening to ‘have a word’.”

The source claims that by evening’s end, Timberlake had managed what the other guys hadn’t – he scored Michael’s digits.

“In the end the guys did actually swap numbers but only because Justin said he’d love to work with George one day. They are really keen on getting a collaboration finalized.”

Catching Fire A Turning Point for Jackson

October 31, 2011

Having his hair catch fire while shooting a Pepsi commercial was a devastating turning point in the life of Michael Jackson, according to a lifelong friend of the star.

David Gest, former husband of Liza Minelli and the producer of a new documentary Michael Jackson: The Life of an Icon, tells BBC Breakfast he believes that the 1984 accident ultimately led Jackson to his doom, by sparking the drug addictions that would later control him.

Jackson was shooting the Pepsi spot at the height of his fame when his hair caught fire due to a pyrotechnic accident.

“When he started his solo career and he left Motown, when he did Off The Wall, Bad and Thriller, he was in complete control of everything he did. He was in charge,” Gest says.

“It was that accident, when you get a head concussion it changes your life because you get addicted to drugs, to get rid of all the pain, and that started with filming that commercial.”

Gest tells the BBC that Jackson, who received treatment for second degree burns following the accident, began taking painkillers for the pain and discomfort as well as having plastic surgery to cover up his hair loss, using a method called “ballooning.”

“He never got over that,” he says. “He had ballooning, ballooning is when you expand the scalp, until the day he died he was being ballooned.”

Jackson died in June, 2009, of an overdose of the drug Propofol. His physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, is currently on trial for manslaughter, accused of having administered the Propofol.

Sugarland returned to Indianapolis on Friday, October 28, and played a free concert in the city where they were forced to cancel a gig after a stage collapsed in August, killing seven concert goers.

Ace Showbiz reports that the country music duo paid tribute to victims of the collapse during the gig at Conseco Fieldhouse, and told the crowd they had earlier visited the site of the disaster.

“Obviously we are here in October – we were supposed to do this show in August. Obviously, the stage is different. You are different and we are different,” vocalist Jennifer Nettles told the audience. “We are all changed by what happened then.”

“We are going to try to give you the best show that we can, and to celebrate healing with you, and to celebrate life and music with you here tonight,” she added.

Wearing all black, Nettles and her partner Kristian Bush reportedly played a 90-minute set for the crowd.

Though the gig was free, attendees were encouraged to donate $10 to the Indiana State Fair Remembrance Fund.

On August 13, the stage collapse at Indiana Fairgrounds killed seven and injured more than 40.

Coen Brothers Want Justin Timberlake

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 8:50 am on

October 31, 2011

Justin Timberlake may have to trade in his dancing shoes for an acoustic guitar if he accepts the role of a young singer-songwriter in the Coen brothers upcoming drama Inside Llewyn Davis.

Industry trade magazine Variety reports that the Coens have offered a leading role to Timberlake in the upcoming drama. The flick is set in the folk music scene that overtook New York City’s Greenwich Village back in the 1960s.

Inside Llewyn Davis will tell the story of Davis, an inspiring and influential musician within his circle who never achieves the mainstream success of his more popular peers.

Though a fictional character, Davis is reportedly based on real-life Greenwich folkie Dave Van Ronk. Robin Hood star Oscar Isaac will play Davis.

Pop star Timberlake has been offered the role of Jim, a young songwriter married to Jean, who will be played by Drive’s Carey Mulligan.

Shooting on Inside Llewyn Davis is slated to begin until early next year. In the meantime, fans of JT can catch the star in the new sci-fi thriller In Time, which just opened this past weekend.

Report: Organizers of Scrapped Metallica Gig Arrested in India

Filed under: Music, Rock, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 8:46 am on

October 31, 2011

Four organizers of a cancelled Metallica concert in Delhi, India, have been arrested after the show was called off and fans rioted, reportedly resulting in several injuries.

The metal gods were scheduled to play their first show in the country — the Indian Grand Prix F1 Rocks — on Friday, but the show was scrapped last minute, reportedly due to a collapsed front barrier. Angry fans then vandalized the equipment on stage and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, many people, including children, were injured in the melee.

Now the BBC reports that four executives of DNA Entertainment Network have been arrested on fraud charges.

According to reports, about 25,000 people were waiting to watch Metallica.

The Times of India said security was lax, the venue was overcrowded and that many people had entered the venue without tickets.

After the gig was scrapped, organizers tried to rearrange the show for the following day but were unable to get the required permit.

“The Metallica concert has become yet another example of chaos and mismanagement in organizing events in India,” Santanu Choudhury wrote in Wall Street Journal India.
