Kelly Clarkson’s sales jump 400% after Ron Paul endorsement

December 30, 2011

Kelly Clarkson’s album sales are up 200 percent since the singer endorsed  US presidential hopeful Ron Paul on Twitter earlier this week.

Clarkson took some serious heat after posting the note, which read, “I love Ron Paul. I liked him a lot during the last republican nomination and no one gave him a chance. If he wins the nomination for the Republican party in 2012 he’s got my vote. Too bad he probably won’t.”

Paul’s detractors immediately jumped on Clarkson, calling the congressman “racist” and “anti-gay.”

But, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon.com sales of Clarkson’s album Stronger spiked 200 percent in a 72-hour period. On Tuesday, the album ranked No. 41 on Amazon’s list of “Movers & Shakers in Music” and by early Friday it had reached No. 13. Later in the day, when DISH checked the site it had jumped to second place, a total spike of 442%.

After the online attack, Clarkson posted a message on Twitter that read, “Man my eyes have been opened to so much hate tonight. If y’all ever disagree with something I say please don’t feel the need to attack me. I will listen to what you say and any articles or viewpoints you have when you say it with respect. Being hateful is not a healthy way to get people to see or hear you.”

Meanwhile, country star Blake Shelton offered to “throat punch” people to defend Kelly if need be.

Taylor Swift to try new things in 2012

Filed under: Country, Music, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 4:25 pm on

December 30, 2011

Taylor Swift says fans looking forward to the release of her upcoming fourth album will be in for a surprise.

The country music sensation tells MTV the new record is “very different” from what audiences have come to expect from her. Swift says she can’t say much, but will reveal that her new songs will be coming from a new place.

“I can’t tell you, because it’s a secret,” Swift told the network earlier this month at the Billboard Women in Music event. “It will be unveiled when it all comes out, because they all seem to have a theme to them, the records that we’ve put out so far, and this one is no different. It’s very different in what it’s about, but it’s no different in the fact that it has its own name.”

Swift reiterated the idea of doing things a little differently when she spoke to Access Hollywood, saying she’s excited about the idea of trying new things.

“I think my goal for the next couple of years would be to make departures in little ways and do things a little differently,” she says. “And to try to maintain a balance between always providing your fans with what they’ve always liked from you and continuing to write all my own songs.”

Swift’s last album, Speak Now, sat at the top of the charts for seven weeks while going triple platinum.

Schwarzenegger action flick goes supernatural

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 4:19 pm on

December 30, 2011

There have been some major changes made to plans for an upcoming action-adventure movie set to star former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Deadline reported last October that the star was set to play a loner who “wages war against a ruthless weapons manufacturer and his private army” in the tough-as-nails drama Black Sands.

Now the star tells a fansite, the picture has been revamped into a thriller with the new title Black Sunday. Schawarzenegger describes his character as being supernatural, but refuses to give anything else away.

“I’m a kind of angel,” Schwarzenegger tells website TheArnoldFans. “I can not currently say more about this film.”

The picture is set to be shot by directors Scott Waugh and Mike McCoy from a script by A-Team scribe Skip Woods. Shooting is slated to start April 1, but fans can look forward to seeing the star back on the screen in the upcoming, action-packed sequel The Expendables 2.

That picture will land in theaters everywhere in the summer of 2012.

Artist loses suit over Ghost Rider ownership

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 2:52 pm on

December 30, 2011

A comic book writer who says he created the mystical Marvel superhero Ghost Rider has been denied his claims in court.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gary Friedrich says he was inspired by daredevil superstar Evel Kneivel when he first imagined the hellbent motorcycle madman known as Ghost Rider some 35 years ago.

Friedrich was reportedly driven out of the funny pages business thanks to a nasty battle with the booze, but when Marvel announced plans to release a Ghost Rider film in 2004, Friedrich contacted a lawyer and claimed ownership of the character.

That the film, released in 2007 and starring Nicolas Cage as the hero, grossed over $230 million at the box office only encouraged the writer to stand his ground as the case made its way through several courtrooms.

Now, with a new Ghost Rider adventure ready to blaze onto the silver screen in the new year, Friedrich has been dealt a nasty blow by a judge who has ruled that the character belongs to Marvel Comics.

New York federal judge Katherine Forrest says Friedrich signed two contracts that hand over ownership of his work at the time to the comic book giant.

There’s no word yet on whether Friedrich plans to appeal the decision.

Chimp death raises questions over Cheeta’s identity

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 2:41 pm on

December 30, 2011

Earlier this week it was reported that Cheeta, the chimpanzee from the classic Tarzan films starring Johnny Weissmuller had died. But now questions are beginning to arise over the real identity of the ape in question.

The chimp, who died Sunday December 25, at an animal sanctuary in Florida, was said to be 80-years-old – too old to be believable according to many scientists.

Scientist Dr. Steve Ross told the New York Times’ Arts Beat blog, “To live into your 70s is really pushing the limits of chimp biology, eighty is tough to swallow.”

Meanwhile, R.D. Rosen, who has previously debunked Cheeta claims, tells the Associated Press, “I’m afraid any chimp who actually shared a soundstage with Weissmuller and [Maureen] O’Sullivan [who played Jane] is long gone.”

This week isn’t the first time it’s been reported that Cheeta has died. In 2008, a ‘Cheeta’ from Palm Springs, Florida passed away. His caretakers also claimed he was the real deal until paperwork proved otherwise.

Debbie Cobb, who had been raising the ‘Cheeta’ that died this week, tells the Times she’s upset by accusations she’s monkeying around with the truth.

“I’m sad to hear that people are questioning that,” she says. “It cracks me up how ignorant some people are, but I think that causes controversy, and isn’t that what it’s all about?”

Age aside, Cheeta was indeed played by more than one chimp and many of those actors are unidentified. According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Lever, who wrote a book about Cheeta, says, “Nobody seems to know very much (or even anything at all) about the chimps who played Cheeta. I rather think he’ll be dying a lot over the next few years.”

Danny Gokey engaged

Filed under: Music, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 2:04 pm on

December 30, 2011

American Idol star Danny Gokey is engaged to be married.

Gokey, who finished third in Idol’s eighth season, is set to marry girlfriend Leyicet Peralta in late January. Though it’s unclear just when Gokey proposed, his spokesperson tells People magazine the singer popped the question in Miami.

“After dinner, they went to the ballet, and finally Danny took her where they had their first date,” says the spokesman. Word is Gokey seriously serenaded Peralta with the Joe Cocker classic “You Are So Beautiful,” before asking if she’d marry him.

She said yes.

The happy couple announced the news on the website for the Sophia’s Heart Foundation, the organization Gokey founded in tribute to his late, first wife, who died just weeks before the star’s Idol audition.

Gokey took to Twitter to express his joy. “No one can go back and start a new beginning,” he tweeted Tuesday. “But anyone can start today and make a new ending.”

Gokey, who was supposed to release a second album in 2011, but didn’t, was recently dropped from the RCA Nashville label.

Blake Shelton would “throat punch” someone for Kelly Clarkson

Filed under: Country, Music, Pop, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 1:49 pm on

December 30, 2011

Country music superstar Blake Shelton has let Kelly Clarkson know he’s on her side – and willing to “throat punch” someone to prove it.

American Idol sweetheart Clarkson started an online controversy earlier this week when she tweeted her support for Republican presidential wannabe Ron Paul.

“I love Ron Paul,” Clarkson tweeted on Twitter. “If he wins the nomination for the Republican party in 2012 he’s got my vote. Too bad he probably won’t.”

The comment brought on an avalanche of responses, many of them unfavourable towards both Paul – whom detractors accuse of being “racist” and “anti-gay” – and Clarkson, prompting Clarkson to clarify that she admires many of Paul’s policies, claiming “I do not support racism. I support gay rights, straight rights, women’s rights, men’s rights, white/black/purple/orange rights. I like Ron Paul because he believes in less government…”

That prompted even more online vitriol, leading Clarkson to plead for peace, posting: “If y’all ever disagree with something I say please don’t feel the need to attack me.”

Starpulse reports that all this was apparently too much for Shelton, star of NBC smash hit talent search The Voice, who waded in to offer Clarkson a public show of support.

“@kelly_clarkson I love you!!!!” Shelton tweeted. “I’ll listen to your view points anytime. And I really wouldn’t mind throat punching someone for you either!!”

It’s nice to have support.

Documentary seeks hidden messages in The Shining

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 1:42 pm on

December 30, 2011

A new documentary aims to expose the secrets and secret meanings behind Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror film The Shining.

Entertainment Weekly reports that director Rodney Ascher’s new film Room 237 dissects the Jack Nicholson freakout fest for hidden details and extra levels of insight.

The doc is set to feature at this year’s Sundance film festival in the New Frontier category.

“It’s a film-nerd love-fest,” Sundance programmer Trevor Groth says of Room 237. “These obsessive people dissect The Shining, and they’ve watched it thousands of times, all finding their own coded meaning and language in it.”

Groth tells the magazine audiences will be shocked to learn the extent to which some people have read into the movie.

“There’s one guy who says The Shining is Stanley Kubrick’s way of telling the world he shot the footage from the [Apollo 11] moon landing,” he says. “He knew he and his family would be killed if he told anyone, so he’s telling us through The Shining.

Starring Nicholson, Shelley Duvall and Scatman Crothers, The Shining is based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, about a writer who moves his family into a gigantic hotel as the winter caretaker.

Room 237 will screen at Sundance in January.

Dark Knight spoiler revealed?

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 1:33 pm on

December 30, 2011

A possible massive spoiler from the plot of the upcoming Batman adventure The Dark Knight Rises might have leaked.

A reporter for the Los Angeles Time visited the set of director Christopher Nolan’s third Bat-Pic and has now shared info on what is said to be a crucial scene.

WARNING, POSSIBLE SPOILER: The Times reports that, in the movie,  the Caped Crusader is put to the test by ferocious new nemesis Bane, played by Inception and Warrior star Tom Hardy. Bane wages war on Gotham City, rounding up and imprisoning citizens – including, in one shocking scene – Bruce Wayne.

Star Christian Bale’s Wayne is, of course, the multi-millionaire alter-ego of the troubled hero. Attention in the scene suddenly shifts, however, with the emergence of Anne Hathaway, purring her way down a staircase as Catwoman.

Hathaway, who wears goggles, stilettos and a skin-tight bodysuit as the feline-esque Selina Kyle, told the paper she thinks the costume is perfect.

“I love the costume,” she said. “I love the costume because everything has a purpose, nothing is in place for fantasy’s sake, and that’s the case with everything in Christopher Nolan’s Gotham City.”

Nolan has said that Rises will be his last Batman adventure, telling EW that the movie will be “the last chapter of our Batman saga.”

Kelly Clarkson faces backlash over Ron Paul support

December 29, 2011

Kelly Clarkson was subject to a volley of vitriol on Twitter earlier this week after she voiced her support for Republican presidential wannabe Ron Paul.

The American Idol star took to the social networking website to tweet about her support for the controversial candidate.

“I love Ron Paul,” Clarkson tweeted. “I liked him a lot during the last republican nomination and no one gave him a chance. If he wins the nomination for the Republican party in 2012 he’s got my vote. Too bad he probably won’t.”

The tweet led to some angry responses from Clarkson’s followers who claim the 12-term congressman is “racist” and “anti-gay.”

Clarkson later tweeted a clarification of her earlier message, writing: “I am really sorry if I have offended anyone. Obviously that was not my intent. I do not support racism. I support gay rights, straight rights, women’s rights, men’s rights, white/black/purple/orange rights. I like Ron Paul because he believes in less government and letting the people (all of us) make the decisions and mold our country. That is all. Out of all of the Republican nominees, he’s my favorite.”

That wasn’t enough for some fans, however, who continued to blast Clarkson’s political position. Eventually the star decided she’d had enough and posted on her blog, urging fans not to be hateful.

“If y’all ever disagree with something I say please don’t feel the need to attack me…” she wrote. “Being hateful is not a healthy way to get people to see or hear you… If you don’t agree with me simply unfollow me. It’s really that easy.”
