American Idol finalist Phillip Phillips has reportedly been urged to undergo surgery immediately.

The singer, who has made it into the show’s top two, suffers from kidney problems.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Phillips refused treatment when he returned to his hometown of Leesburg, Georga, last weekend so he could stick to the show’s rigorous shooting schedule. But he has been advised by doctors to get treatment as soon as the show is over, reports TMZ.

Sources inside the production are said to have told THR that Phillips has been experiencing pain “so severe” that he’s been granted permission to sit out the weekly  Ford video shoots for several weeks now.

“I’ve been sick, so they gave me those days to rest,” Phillips told THR.

Phillips underwent emergency medical treatment in March for extreme abdominal pain but made it back in time for the Top 13 results show.

Phillips, 20, and Jessica Sanchez, 16, will battle it out for the Idol crown this week and the winner will be announced May 23.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame regrets not recognizing Donna Summer

Summer, a.k.a. “The Queen of Disco,” died yesterday (Thursday, May 17) of lung cancer, at age 63.

The star sold millions of albums and won five Grammys and six American Music Awards. One of those Grammys was for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, for her 1979 single “Hot Stuff.” Summer was the first recipient of the award in what as a new category at the time.

She never made it into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, however, despite being nominated more than once. And Jon Landau, the chairman of the Hall’s nominating committee, says he regrets the oversight.

The New York Times reports that Landau has issued a statement which says, “There is absolutely no doubt that the extraordinary Donna Summer belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.”

He adds that he hopes to rectify the situation soon: “Regrettably, despite being nominated on a number of occasions, our voting group has failed to recognize her — an error I can only hope is finally and permanently rectified next year.”

Star has to skip Cannes, because he’s in prison

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 1:52 pm on

May 18, 2012

The star of one of the hottest films at Cannes couldn’t be at the movie’s screening, because he’s currently serving time in prison for murder, according to reports.

Forbes reports that Aniello Arena, who stars in the Italian drama Reality, was plucked from his prison theatre troupe by director Matteo Garrone. Now, he’s the toast of Cannes.

With a skewed perspective on the effects of reality TV, Reality features Arena as Luciano, a fisherman invited to appear on the Italian version of the reality TV show Big Brother.

In actual reality, Arena is reportedly serving twenty years to life locked away in an Italian prison for murder, though publicists have declined to further explain his crimes or sentence.

Director Garrone explains that Arena was allowed out of his cell to shoot the drama as part of a work release program.

Now, word is the prisoner could find himself the recipient of the major French festival’s Best Actor award for his work on the film. Should he win, however, don’t expect to see Arena at the ceremony, as Italian officials refused the new star permission to travel to France for the festival.

Axl Rose suffers haematoma

May 18, 2012

Axl Rose has tweeted a gruesome picture of his leg after injuring himself while traveling across the globe.

The 50-year-old Guns N’ Roses rocker posted the pic on his Twitter account yesterday as the rest of his band flew to Dublin. “Can U say HemaToma?!” he wrote.

The UK Sun reports that Rose’s agent released word the singer had pulled a hamstring after slipping. A haematoma occurs when blood collects under the skin.

“Axl needed medical attention for a nasty leg injury and was unable to fly with the rest of the band,” said the rock star’s rep.

Legendary 1980s hair metal outfit GNR is currently in the midst of a world tour. Though the band has been around for ages, they still seem to be living up to their old reputation.

Fans at shows at Moscow’s Stadium Live reportedly complained that Axl was two hours late to get on stage.

Brooke Shields in stage production of The Exorcist

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 12:01 pm on

May 18, 2012

Brooke Shields is set to star in a new stage version of the 1970s Hollywood horror classic The Exorcist.

The Wrap reports that the Pretty Baby and Freeway star will join Richard Chamberlain in the production to be staged at the Geffen Playhouse.

Shields will reportedly play the mother of Regan, the possessed young girl at the centre of the story. Chamberlain will star as Father Merrin, the Exorcist himself. Emily Yetter will play Regan.

The theatrical show is playwright John Pielmeier’s adaptation of William Friedkin’s 1973 horror film which is itself an adaptation of William Peter Blatty’s 1971 novel.

Pielmeier says his play – directed by John Doyle – won’t try to compete with the film’s gruesome visual effects.

“The story of the battle between faith and evil needed no spinning heads or green vomit,” Pielmeier says. “The horror should unfold instead on a simple set with an incredible cast (which we absolutely have), and the central conflict between doubting Father Karras and the demon should be a series of debates, in which the young girl possessed is the least of the figures present.”

The Exorcist opens at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, July 11.

Naomi Watts scared of playing Princess Di

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 11:29 am on

May 18, 2012

Naomi Watts says she almost said no to playing Princess Diana in the upcoming drama Caught in Flight.

The beautiful Hollywood star tells the Press Association she thinks so highly of the late princess that she considered refusing the role out of fear. Watts will star in the film that focuses on the last two years of the beloved royal’s life.

“She is a part of our history, an incredible woman and fascinating but (suffered) a tragic ending,” Watts says. “The filmmakers came to me and it’s a good script and it’s very scary and I kind of wanted to say no but I couldn’t.”

The UK-born Australian actress says she’s always admired the late Princess of Wales.

“I saw the wedding and everything and she is a very inspiring woman and it’s kind of impressive how she sort of changed the whole gearing of the tradition of the royal family and opened it up and brought warmth to it,” she says.

Watts says she knows she’ll face a challenge capturing the charisma and grace of Diana, but hopes to do the best she can with the challenging role.

“I’m doing all the research and there is so much to read, I just hope we make a good film and people can learn something new about her that’s interesting… It’s going to be a tough one, it’s a big beast to take on, I just try to do my best.”

Wayne Newton reportedly accused of sexual harassment

Filed under: Music, Pop, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 11:06 am on

May 18, 2012

Wayne Newton has reportedly been accused of sexually harassing a young female employee.

Celebrity gossip website TMZ reports that the classic crooner is the subject of a lawsuit filed by a former business partner who claims Newton ruined plans to convert the star’s Las Vegas mansion into a museum.

The former partner claims that, after he invested in the project, it began to go down the tubes, as Newton and his family refused to cooperate with the necessary construction, argued about plans, kept their animals on the property and even refused to move out of the house.

The suit also claims Newton refused to hand over personal memorabilia he had promised to donate to the museum.

Most shocking, however, is a claim that Newton’s “sexual behaviour” towards a young female employee had driven her from the project – and the job.

TMZ reports that, according to the suit, the former partner alleges Newton was “sexually reprehensible and intimidating” towards the woman and “engaged in obnoxious sexual behavior” including “wet, sloppy, and disgusting” kisses that were “clearly of a sexual nature.”

“She had to brace herself every time she saw him for this inevitable assault,” claims the suit.

The Associated Press reports that Newton’s lawyer, J. Stephen Peek, dismissed the allegations as “salacious” lies, adding that “the real substance will come out in time.”

Newton is being sued for breach of contract and fraud.

President Obama: Donna Summer was ‘Queen of Disco’

Filed under: Music, Pop, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 10:08 am on

May 18, 2012

Among all of the tributes flooding in from across the world following the passing of Disco Diva Donna Summer, perhaps none carry the weight of an official message from the president of the United States.

E! Online reports that President Barack Obama was among the many fans to pause and reflect upon the death of the singer, who died yesterday from cancer at the age of 63.

The President released an official statement from the White House, mourning Summer’s passing and commenting on the fondness the President and First Lady share for Summer’s music.

“Michelle and I were saddened to hear about the passing of Donna Summer,” Obama says in the statement.

“A five-time Grammy Award winner, Donna truly was the ‘Queen of Disco.’  Her voice was unforgettable, and the music industry has lost a legend far too soon. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Donna’s family and her dedicated fans.”

Though she released her first album, Lady of the Night, in 1974, Summer scored her first hit with “Love to Love You Baby” in 1975. Her last single, “To Paris With Love,” hit number one on the U.S. dance chart in 2010.

Sacha Baron Cohen nearly stoned by angry mob

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 9:18 am on

May 18, 2012

The Dictator star Sacha Baron Cohen says he was almost stoned by an angry mob while visiting Jerusalem.

Australian newspaper The Daily Telegraph reports that Cohen says that while he was dressed as an over-the-top version of a Hasidic Jew in Israel – the sort of thing he does – he was chased by the enraged, stone-wielding mob.

“A bunch of Hasidic Jews ran after me with rocks and I ended up hiding in a bathroom store,” the funnyman says.

Cohen reveals he normally has an escape plan for such stunts, but that this time, his co-conspirators failed him. “Normally in dangerous situations I have a getaway car,” he says. “But as I ran towards the getaway car it drove away.”

The star says he attempted to placate the angry crowd by revealing that he himself is Jewish.

“I found myself running down the street, running for my life, and being chased by these Hasidic nutcases,” Cohen recalls.

“I turned round to calm them down, and I shouted in Hebrew ‘I am Jewish’, which apparently is the worst thing ever you can tell Hasidic Jews. It was then they decided that they wanted to really kill me.”

Fortunately, the star escaped with his life.

The Dictator is in theatres now.

Blade Runner writer returns for sequel?

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico — D.I.S.H. @ 8:56 am on

May 18, 2012

The screenwriter of the original Blade Runner is gearing up to re-team with director Ridley Scott on a sequel to the 1980s sci-fi masterpiece.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hampton Fancher has entered into negotiations to develop an idea he’s got for the follow-up to the Harrison Ford cult classic. Scott has already signed on to helm the pic some thirty years after directing the original.

Based on the Phillip K. Dick story Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, the original script was attributed to Fancher and writer David Peoples.

Neither Scott nor Fancher are talking about their plans for the follow-up, except to say the story will be set “some years after the first film concluded.” Star Wars star Ford played “blade runner” Rick Deckard in the original, though there’s no word yet on whether or not he’ll return for the sequel.

Set in a dystopian future where rogue robots called “replicants” are hunted down by the “blade runners,” the original film was a box office disappointment upon first release, though it’s acquired a huge following since and today is recognized as one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time.

Scott seems to be having fun returning to his past work lately. In addition to Blade Runner, the director just revisited his other 1980s sci-fi classic, Alien, with his new blockbuster Prometheus.
