Are Hank Williams Jr. and Justin Timberlake planning to record a duet?

People magazine reports the unlikely duo discussed the possible collaboration backstage after a recent concert by the country music star.

Timberlake, a southern-boy born in Tennessee, has deep country roots even if his own music tends to gravitate towards R&B flavoured pop. Nonetheless, he recently took mom Lynn and his fiancee, starlet Jessica Biel, to the show in Southaven Mississippi.

After introducing himself backstage, Timberlake hit it off with Williams big time, shooting the breeze about all manner of southern-fried subjects. Williams says he and the SexyBack singer share a friend in Kid Rock and a mutual disdain for cruise ships.

“What a great guy!” Williams tells People. “He sure is a good country boy.

“We talked about girls, guitars, turkey hunting, going on cruises and how much we hate them, even though Bobby (Kid Rock) is on one right now and loving it, ugh! Hell, Justin and I even talking about recording a blues song sometime.”

Williams performed the concert under the stage name Rockin’ Randall.

Taylor Hanson having fifth baby

April 19, 2012

Taylor Hanson, the 29-year-old baby faced lead singer of the pop group Hanson, has revealed that his wife Natalie is pregnant with the couple’s fifth child.

People magazine reports that the singer (who, along with his brothers Isaac and Zac scored a massive ‘90s hit with “MmmBop”) is thrilled to be sharing the news.

“Natalie and I are so anxious to meet our fifth mini-Hanson,” Hanson tells the magazine. “As are the four siblings at home who are counting the days to the arrival.”

The baby, which is due later this year, will join Hanson’s other kids Ezra, Penelope, River and Viggo. Having lots of offspring seems to run in the family as Isaac and Zac have another four kids between them.

Back in 2009, the singer told People that having a large family isn’t as big a deal as some people think it is.

“After two kids, you’re outnumbered,” he said at the time. “So once you cross having three, having [more] is not such a big deal. I think it’s pretty much ‘the more the merrier’ for them at this point.”

Hanson are currently on the road in support of their new album Shout It Out.

Carrie Underwood dreading husband’s playoff beard

April 17, 2012

Carrie Underwood says that while she’s thrilled the Nashville Predators have made the NHL playoffs, she’s not looking forward to her husband’s playoff beard.

The country music superstar tells People magazine that her hubby, Predators centre Mike Fisher, subscribes to the hockey tradition of growing a beard once playoff season starts.

“I’m not looking forward to the playoff beard,” Underwood tells the magazine. “[The players] all grow out their facial hair during the playoffs.”

The star says that while she likes a man who’s not entirely clean shaven, she’s not a fan of the wildman look.

“Before they started, I told Mike, ‘You need to shave close,’” she says. “He always looks good with a little stubble, but it’s probably going to get out of hand soon.”

Underwood’s says she’s already figured out the perfect retaliation however.

“I’m going to stop shaving, too,” she jokes. “Just kidding!”

The American Idol says the trade that sent Fisher from Ottawa to Nashville in February was a wonderful surprise.

“What a blessing. He could’ve gone to any one of 29 other teams. But Nashville loves him and he loves Nashville. And I love having him there.”

Study says movies driving kids to drink

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico, Uncategorized — D.I.S.H. @ 1:20 pm on February 21, 2012

Do boozing Hollywood stars encourage kids to pick up the bottle?

That’s the theory put forth by a new U.S. study published this week. Agence France Presse reports that the study, involving over 6,500 randomly selected 10-14 year olds, suggests that exposure to scenes of characters drinking in Hollywood movies can inspire kids to do the same.

According to the AFP, during the two-year course of the study, the number of respondents who said they drank alcohol rose from 11 per cent to 25 per cent. The percent who said they had been binge drinking — defined as five or more drinks in a row — rose from 4 per cent to 13 per cent.

The study said that, while peer influence was found to be the biggest risk factor, exposure to movies involving booze ranked third.

“Movie alcohol exposure accounted for 28 per cent of the alcohol onset and 20 per cent of the binge drinking transitions,” claims the study.

“Alcohol use in movies is typically modelled in positive situations, without negative effects, and often shown with alcohol brands, which consolidates both the adolescent’s identify as a drink and brand allegiance.”

The study, published on the online journal, BMJ Open, was led by James Sargent, professor at the Dartmouth Medical School in New Hampshire. Sargent warns that the pervasive influence of Hollywood films has now gone international.

He says, “Like influenza, images in Hollywood movies begin in one region of the world then spread globally, where they may affect drinking behaviours among adolescents everywhere they are distributed.”

Youssou N’Dour running for president of Senegal

January 4, 2012

African musician Youssou N’Dour says he wants to be the next president of Senegal.

Billboard reports the 52-year-old world music star wants to challenge sitting president Abdoulaye Wade, who hopes to win a third term.

N’Dour, one of the most famous musicians in African history, made his announcement on Monday of this week on his own private radio and TV stations in the country. The musician joins a list of some 20 other candidates in the election that is slated to take place in less than 2 months.

“For a very long time, many Senegalese of different backgrounds have called for my candidacy for the presidency next February,” N’Dour said in his announcement. “I’ve listened, I’ve heard and I am responding favorably to their request. I am a candidate. It’s a supreme patriotic duty, the best I can give of myself. I am the alternative to the current leadership in place in the country.”

A well known critic of the West African nation’s current government, N’Dour has often expressed his frustrations with Wade’s policies over the decade he has been in power.

Last year violent protests began across Senegal in reaction to power outages and Wade’s determination to run again, under a loop hole found in the country’s laws.

N’Dour released his most recent album Mbalakh Dafay Wakh, last year.

Miles Davis movie a “gangster” story

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico, Uncategorized — D.I.S.H. @ 11:44 am on January 3, 2012

January 3, 2012

Don Cheadle says his Miles Davis biopic will be a “gangster” story.

The Hotel Rwanda star tells the Wall Street Journal that plans are well underway for the film, which he plans to direct and star in as the legendary jazzman. Cheadle says his plans for the picture include taking an unconventional approach to the traditional biopic structure.

“It’s not a biopic, per se,” Cheadle says. “It’s a gangster pic. It’s a movie that Miles Davis would have wanted to star in. Without throwing history away, we’re trying to shuffle it and make it more cubist. The bulk of it takes place in ‘79, in a period where he actually wasn’t playing. But we traverse a lot of it his life, but it’s not a cradle to grave story.”

The star says his idea for the film would have been more accepted by Hollywood a decade ago.

“This is the kind of movie the business 10 years ago may have leapt at,” he says. “But now, you don’t really see movies like this. We have a studio offer and we’re trying to back into a budget number, like we always have to do, without gutting the piece.”

Perhaps the biggest hurdle Cheadle may be facing is that another movie about Davis’ life is already in the works, with Notorious director George Tillman Jr. attached.

Cheadle, however, says he’s not worried about the prospect.

“Look, if the world is ready to have two Miles Davis movies, fantastic. He should have eight or 10 of them… If there’s another quality movie about this legend, that’s great. I don’t think anyone’s going to be making the kind of movie we’re making.”

Fans of Cheadle can look forward to seeing the star in the upcoming cable television series House of Lies, which debuts on Showtime later this week.
