Youssou N’Dour running for president of Senegal

January 4, 2012

African musician Youssou N’Dour says he wants to be the next president of Senegal.

Billboard reports the 52-year-old world music star wants to challenge sitting president Abdoulaye Wade, who hopes to win a third term.

N’Dour, one of the most famous musicians in African history, made his announcement on Monday of this week on his own private radio and TV stations in the country. The musician joins a list of some 20 other candidates in the election that is slated to take place in less than 2 months.

“For a very long time, many Senegalese of different backgrounds have called for my candidacy for the presidency next February,” N’Dour said in his announcement. “I’ve listened, I’ve heard and I am responding favorably to their request. I am a candidate. It’s a supreme patriotic duty, the best I can give of myself. I am the alternative to the current leadership in place in the country.”

A well known critic of the West African nation’s current government, N’Dour has often expressed his frustrations with Wade’s policies over the decade he has been in power.

Last year violent protests began across Senegal in reaction to power outages and Wade’s determination to run again, under a loop hole found in the country’s laws.

N’Dour released his most recent album Mbalakh Dafay Wakh, last year.

Miles Davis movie a “gangster” story

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico, Uncategorized — D.I.S.H. @ 11:44 am on January 3, 2012

January 3, 2012

Don Cheadle says his Miles Davis biopic will be a “gangster” story.

The Hotel Rwanda star tells the Wall Street Journal that plans are well underway for the film, which he plans to direct and star in as the legendary jazzman. Cheadle says his plans for the picture include taking an unconventional approach to the traditional biopic structure.

“It’s not a biopic, per se,” Cheadle says. “It’s a gangster pic. It’s a movie that Miles Davis would have wanted to star in. Without throwing history away, we’re trying to shuffle it and make it more cubist. The bulk of it takes place in ‘79, in a period where he actually wasn’t playing. But we traverse a lot of it his life, but it’s not a cradle to grave story.”

The star says his idea for the film would have been more accepted by Hollywood a decade ago.

“This is the kind of movie the business 10 years ago may have leapt at,” he says. “But now, you don’t really see movies like this. We have a studio offer and we’re trying to back into a budget number, like we always have to do, without gutting the piece.”

Perhaps the biggest hurdle Cheadle may be facing is that another movie about Davis’ life is already in the works, with Notorious director George Tillman Jr. attached.

Cheadle, however, says he’s not worried about the prospect.

“Look, if the world is ready to have two Miles Davis movies, fantastic. He should have eight or 10 of them… If there’s another quality movie about this legend, that’s great. I don’t think anyone’s going to be making the kind of movie we’re making.”

Fans of Cheadle can look forward to seeing the star in the upcoming cable television series House of Lies, which debuts on Showtime later this week.

December 20, 2011

Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and Paula Abdul are among the “Ten Best Mannered People of 2011.”

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, a.k.a. Kate Middleton, tops the list, as compiled by the National League of Junior Cotillions. Middleton is named for “the poise and dignity with which she conducts herself in the public spotlight.”

The Bieb comes in second place, for “consistently showing courtesy to his fans,” followed by Abdul, who is praised for her “encouragement to aspiring entertainers.”

NLJC national director Elizabeth Anne Winters said in a statement that the annual list, compiled by the etiquette and social training program, is based on a person’s “demonstration of dignity, honor and respect.” Cotillion students and directors nominate people to be considered.

Green Bay Packer Aaron Rogers took fourth place for being a positive role model. Taylor Swift rounds out the top five “for inspiring young people with her music and her manners.”

The rest of the well mannered list is comprised of “Good Morning America” host George Stephanopoulos, child prodigy Jackie Evancho, CNN talk show host Erin Burnett, Harry Potter star Emma Watson and Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Ebow.

A dishonourable mention goes to Kim Kardashian, who is named “The Most Ill-Mannered Person of 2011″ for “making a private matter public and disrespecting the institution of marriage.”

Here is the full list of Best Mannered People as chosen by the National League of Junior Cotillions:

2. Justin Bieber – “for consistently showing courtesy to his fans.”

Rihanna under fire

Filed under: Music, Pop, Sympatico, Uncategorized — D.I.S.H. @ 2:02 pm on November 16, 2011

November, 16, 2011

Rihanna is once again courting controversy, this time by lighting up in a new series of promotional photos for her new album Talk That Talk as well as in the video for her new hit single “We Found Love.”

The saucy R&B hitmaker is seen smoking in the new photos, which feature the star posing provocatively, cigarette dangling from her lips.

The promo pics have sparked the ire of Ireland’s Ulster Cancer Foundation, which says that Rihanna is setting a bad example for her young fans by glamorizing the tobacco habit

“Three-quarters of adult smokers start the habit as teenagers, which is why it is so irresponsible of Rihanna to influence her young fan base in this way,” says Doreen Reegan, spokesperson for the charity.

“After so much hype around the filming of the video it was very disappointing to see Rihanna so blatantly smoking throughout it,” says Reegan. “Artists such as Rihanna are held in high esteem and regarded as role models by millions of young people.

“We are very concerned that young people watching the video will see smoking as glamorous and want to copy her behaviour.”

Some Not Happy About Affleck/Damon White Bulger Project

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico, Uncategorized — D.I.S.H. @ 11:18 am on November 1, 2011

November 1, 2011

It seems not everyone is thrilled with the news that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon will reunite to develop a movie about notorious alleged Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed just last week that the Good Will Hunting boys were reuniting for the flick, which will chronicle the rise and eventual fall of Bulger, who was arrested earlier this year after 16 years on the run.

Damon has said he’ll star as Bulger, while his old friend Affleck will direct the picture set
in Affleck’s hometown.

That news doesn’t sit too well, it seems, with some people connected to the real life Bulger.

Tommy Donahue, the son of a man allegedly killed by Bulger, says he’s not sure what
to make of Hollywood’s plans to tell the story.

“If anyone makes this movie, I’m pleased it’s these two. They’re brilliant,” Donahue tells
the Boston Globe. “But I definitely have mixed emotions about this. Hopefully they can
depict Whitey Bulger for what he is. They’ll need to do their homework, though.”

Expressing similar reservations is Anthony Cardinale, a lawyer for alleged New England crime
boss Francis “Cadillac Frank” Salemme. Cardinale says he thinks Damon is making a
big mistake.

“If it’s done honestly, [Damon] will look like an idiot, a treacherous piece of junk,” he
says. “It’ll be a bad career move for him. [If not done accurately], it’s a worse career
move.”

MC Hammer Joins Occupy Movement

Filed under: Music, Sympatico, Uncategorized, Urban — D.I.S.H. @ 3:15 pm on October 27, 2011

October 27, 2011

MC Hammer has joined the “Occupy” protests that are sweeping the planet.

All Hip-Hop reports the 1990s rap star took to the streets of his native Oakland on Wednesday night to show his support for protestors who had clashed with riot police the night before.

On Tuesday Oakland police targeted protestors with tear gas in a violent effort to clear the activists from Frank Ogala Plaza near City Hall, where they had been demonstrating for days.

Hammer took to the social networking website Twitter to express his reasons for taking part in the protest, which was inspired by the Occupy Wall Street protest in New York City.

“The unabated abuse of the PEOPLE can never be tolerated! They were expressing systemic frustration and pain, peacefully,” Hammer wrote. “You knew this would happen. You cannot eliminate the middle class and expect quiet resolution.”

Hammer posted several photos on his Twitter page of himself at the Occupy Oakland protest, encouraging fans to join him.

“We’re here 14th & Broadway… peacefully assembled,” he tweeted. “It’s about the People. #OccupyOakland.”

Young Actors Eying “Die Hard” Role

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico, Uncategorized — D.I.S.H. @ 12:21 pm on October 17, 2011

October 17, 2011

Some of the hottest young men in Hollywood are hoping to join the McClane family and win the role of Bruce Willis’ son in the upcoming A Good Day to Die Hard.

Industry trade magazine Variety reports that plans for the fifth installment of the Die Hard franchise call for the debut of John McClane Jr., heir to the McClane family tradition of having really bad days involving terrorists and explosions.

Word is Good Day to Die Hard will introduce McClane Jr. as a potential candidate to carry the series forward in the future, possibly replacing Willis as the lead.

Sources tell Variety that Willis will spend the next few days reading with actors vying for the role. Candidates are said to include X-Men: The Last Stand’s Ben Foster, Paul Dano of Where the Wild Things Are, Aaron Paul from TV’s Breaking Bad and Milo Ventimiglia from TV’s Heroes.

Deadline reported back in August that Max Payne helmer John Moore is directing and working from a script currently being typed up by X-Men Origins: Wolverine and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra scribe Skip Woods.

Though details about the latest chapter in the Die Hard series are scarce, it’s known the story will involve the two McClanes battling baddies in Russia.

Shooting on A Good Day to Die Hard is set to begin in 2012.

Don Johnson Offered “Django Unchained” Role

Filed under: Entertainment, Sympatico, Uncategorized — D.I.S.H. @ 1:59 pm on October 12, 2011

October 12, 2011

Miami Vice star Don Johnson has been offered the role of a villain in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming western Django Unchained.

Deadline reports that Tarantino wants Johnson to play the role of a cold-hearted, but rich plantation owner named Spencer Bennett.

Should he agree to sign on, Johnson will join a cast that already includes such Hollywood big shots as Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx, Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz and Kurt Russell. Russell joined the production just last week, stepping in for Kevin Costner, who bowed out.

Django Unchained tells the story of a freed slave (Foxx) who teams up with a German bounty hunter (Waltz) to rescue his wife from a fearsome plantation owner (DiCaprio) who forces his male slaves to fight and his female slaves to prostitute themselves.

Word is that Tarantino has been trying for some time to woo Johnson for the villainous role of a plantation owner encountered by Django and the bounty hunter during the course of their journey.

Johnson most recently appeared on the big screen in the box office bomb Bucky Larson: Born To Be A Star.

Shooting on Django Unchained is slated to begin later this year.
